This will entail finding any software and hardware problems, removing any 'nasties' like viruses or malware, installing software to prevent further 'nasties', and then optimizing with tidying and speeding up. Just a friendly warning for those of you who buy online. We noticed a debit of €15 on the bank account for a company called "WLY complete," trading as Complete Save (https://completesave.ie/) and a bit of investigation shows that they are a company that shoehorn themselves into the likes of Ticketmaster and Irish Rail, offering you "discounted" prices. You get signed up by completing the ticket (or whatever) purchase and you get a month free, then they start to bill you the €15 a month. It's completely dishonest and covered by legal speak meaning you will only find out after you have paid, and I would bet you don't get refunded easily. They're nothing more than parasites, common thieves and the sooner the truth is out, the better.

Time for a bit of a rant. With the advent of back to school, I'm hearing the usual "Can you put Windows 10 on my laptop/computer? The school/college say I have to have it."
This is exactly what Microsoft want, and is like being told you can only buy petrol from one petrol station. The reality is that as of September 2019, I know of two programs that require Windows 10 (a flight simulator game and Farming Simulator 2019). The fact is, most software that school will be requiring (Office, email, a browser) don't require the latest all bells and whistles version of Windows. Their justification is that there are some reports that Windows 7 will stop being supported next year. Meanwhile, I have customers still using Windows XP, 2000 and even one on Windows 98. They can still open the latest Word documents, PDFs and video files. It is utter tosh that Windows 10 is required, and I'd be grateful if you could share this amongst friends with school age children. The sooner they stop doing it, the better for us as customers, and the better your computers will run.

Don't forget, with less than a week to go of the school holidays, the prices on laptops etc will start to increase from now until Christmas. If you're out for a bargain, now's the time to buy. I recommend Dabs, who aren't the cheapest but are consistently in the top 3 for pricing and spec. And just remember, if you want a new pc set up (and maybe Windows 8/8.1 removed. It's very slow), you know where I am.

Ok, so with the advent of Windows 10 arriving, I can now install it on your PCs. But, so far, it's hardly glowing so you might want to think twice. Cortana, the voice recognition, isn't very accurate (if you're used to Siri or Google, you'll be disappointed) and insists on being "American English." It seems quick enough to start up, but quite a few programs have already crashed. The new browser, "Edge," seems ok, a bit like Chrome. But again, quite a few websites aren't being displayed properly. Oh, and Bing tries to direct you to their preferred websites, even if it's not the one you just typed in.

In short, maybe wait a bit.

Did you know?

Computer equipment is cheapest in July and August, mainly because everyone's saving their pennies for holidays. So, whilst the laptop you want might not be cheaper, you will find it a lot higher spec.

Also. Sorting a new laptop for someone yesterday and they highlighted something else that costs us all money. They wanted a laptop with 8gb RAM and a 1Tb drive. The next nearest spec laptop with that was €150 more than it's 4Gb/500Gb counterpart. But, in reality a drive is €40 and memory is €21. Saving you about €90 by upgrading it yourself.
