🛏️ How big is a bed bug? Bigger than many people realise!

One of the most common misconceptions we hear is that bed bugs are so tiny that they’re almost impossible to see with the naked eye.

In reality, a fully grown adult bed bug is roughly the size of an apple seed — around 5–7 mm long. They are flat, oval-shaped and usually brown/reddish-brown, becoming darker and more swollen after feeding.

📍 These photographs were taken during a recent bed bug inspection in Drogheda, Co. Louth. We are currently seeing an increase in bed bug problems and enquiries coming from the Drogheda and surrounding Louth area.

Adult bed bugs are easily visible to the naked eye — you don't need a microscope or magnifying glass to see them. Younger stages (nymphs), however, are considerably smaller and paler, making early infestations more difficult to spot.

🔎 Often the first clue isn't the bed bug itself.

Check carefully around mattress seams, piping, labels, bed frames, headboards, screw holes and joints. One of the most important warning signs is small black or very dark spots.

These can be bed bug faecal staining, often appearing like tiny black dots or ink marks on sheets, mattress corners, seams, bed frames and around their hiding places.

Finding clusters of these dark spots can be a strong indication of bed bug activity, even if you haven't actually seen a live bed bug.

🐝 Seeing large numbers of wasps? It may not be a nest.

We’re getting a lot of calls at the moment from people concerned about large numbers of wasps gathering around trees, plants and other food sources.

In many cases, there is no nest nearby — the wasps are simply feeding, and this can sometimes result in surprisingly large numbers gathering in one area.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much that can or needs to be done when this is the case. The good news is that wasps feeding like this are generally much less defensive and aggressive than wasps protecting a nest.

So if you’re seeing activity similar to the video, don’t automatically assume you have a wasp nest.
