We’re sometimes asked, "Should I say domestic violence or domestic abuse❓"

There isn’t a wrong answer, but the terms can mean different things to different people. While domestic violence often refers to physical violence, domestic abuse is a broader term that includes emotional, psychological, sexual, financial and coercive or controlling behaviour.

The most important thing to remember is that abuse doesn't have to involve physical violence to be abuse.

The Executive has acknowledged that women and girls living in rural communities face additional risks to their safety and greater barriers to accessing justice and support services. This is why raising awareness within local communities is so important. By challenging harmful attitudes, cultures and beliefs, we can help create meaningful change. It is essential that communities are equipped to recognise the signs of gender-based violence, foster safe environments where women feel able to speak out, and ensure they are signposted to appropriate support services, such as Women’s Aid. Sport has the unique power to bring people together, build confidence, create positive role models, and strengthen communities. Sports clubs like Tattyreagh are often at the heart of local communities, placing coaches, volunteers, committee members, and players in a position to recognise concerns, promote healthy relationships, and create environments where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.

Supporting counsellors to support others.

Ending Violence Against Women and Girls and Domestic Violence training equips counsellors with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to respond safely, compassionately, and effectively to those affected by abuse. Together, we strengthen support, increase understanding, and help create safer futures. Thank-you to all who attended, showing your commitment to understanding and responding effectively to domestic abuse and all forms of gender-based violence.

Could you help improve support for women in rural communities?

A research study is exploring how living in Fermanagh and Omagh can shape women’s experiences of domestic abuse.

Women aged 18+ who live, or have lived, in the district and have experienced domestic abuse are invited to take part in a confidential interview.

Participation is entirely voluntary, and all information shared will be treated in confidence. Interviews can take place in person or online, and a £20 payment is provided as a thank you for your time.
