Here's a simple question that catches a lot of businesses out...

Who actually owns your CRM? 🤔

❌ Not the person who logs in most often.
❌ Not the person who helped set it up years ago.
❌ And not automatically your IT team.

👉 Every successful CRM needs someone responsible for adoption, data quality, training, and continuous improvement.
👉 Without clear ownership, even the best CRM quickly becomes an expensive database full of outdated information.
👉 And with AI becoming part of almost every CRM, poor-quality data doesn't just create confusion - it creates poor recommendations and unreliable insights. 📊

Whether you call them a CRM Champion or a RevOps lead, having one person accountable makes all the difference. They become the bridge between technology and the people using it every day.

For many of my clients, that's where I help.

Sometimes it's coaching an existing team member into the role.
Sometimes it's helping define the position before they recruit.

Either way, giving your CRM an owner is one of the smartest investments you can make.

So, if someone asked today, "Who owns your CRM?" - could everyone in your business give the same answer?

Why Every CRM Project Needs a Client-Side Project Manager

Think your vendor's project manager is looking after your business? Think again. 👀

When you're investing in a new CRM, ERP, or another business system, it's easy to assume the vendor's project manager has everything covered. The reality is they're there to deliver the project for the vendor - not necessarily to protect your business interests.

👉 A client-side project manager keeps your goals front and centre throughout the implementation.
👉 They challenge scope drift, translate technical jargon into business outcomes, and make sure the solution you're getting is still the one you set out to achieve.
👉 Most implementation problems don't happen overnight. They build up over months when no one is watching the gaps between your requirements and what's actually being delivered. ⚠️

That's why I remain completely tech-agnostic. My role isn't to champion a particular system - it's to make sure your investment delivers the outcomes your business needs.

If you're planning a CRM or business systems implementation this year, ask yourself one simple question:

Who is sitting on your side of the table? 🤝

🛑 Stop Buying Software - Start Buying Business Outcomes

Here's a thought that might challenge the way you've always approached technology investments...

Most businesses buy software first and figure everything else out afterwards. That's often where projects begin to go off track. 💭

👉 Start with the business outcome you want to achieve - not the software you want to buy.
👉 Map your processes before speaking to vendors, so you're choosing technology that fits your business rather than changing your business to fit the technology.
👉 Independent, vendor-agnostic advice helps you focus on what delivers value, not what's easiest to sell. 🤝

CRM, ERP and AI platforms are all powerful tools, but they're only part of the picture. The real success comes from understanding your people, your processes and your goals before a contract is ever signed.

That's why I don't recommend systems based on commissions or preferred vendors. Every business is different, and the right solution starts with understanding what success actually looks like for you.

Before your next software demo, ask yourself one simple question:

What business outcome am I actually trying to achieve?

If you can't answer that clearly, it may be too early to choose a platform.

The #1 Mistake Businesses Make with CRM Projects ❌

Most businesses think a CRM or system project starts the day they sign the vendor contract.

Spoiler alert: It doesn't. 🤫

The project actually starts months before that. The work you do before you even choose a system is honestly the most important part of the entire journey.

When you work with me, we don't just jump into demos. We take a proper, end-to-end approach to make sure your investment actually pays off. Here is what that looks like:

👉 Stage 1: Requirements
We don't use generic internet checklists. I sit down with your actual team to map out your current processes, find the silos, and build a detailed, honest spec tailored to your business goals.

👉 Stage 2: Vendor Evaluation
I sit in your corner during vendor meetings, asking the tough questions and cutting through the smoke and mirrors so you can compare apples with apples.

👉 Stage 3: Implementation & Adoption
Once the contract is signed, I stay on as your independent, client-side project manager to hold the vendor accountable and ensure your team actually adopts the new system.

Every shortcut taken at the beginning costs you ten times more later. If you are staring at a massive system change and wondering where to even start, let’s have a chat.

Let's focus less on "which system should we buy" and more on "what are we actually trying to achieve?" 🚀

What Today’s Executives Still Misunderstand About CRM (well most anyway!)

1. CRM Is a Strategy, Not Just Software

CRM should reflect how your business sells and grows. It is not just a tracking tool.

CRM supports all Relationships for your Business - that includes Vendors, Stakeholders, Community, AI (such as Claude, GPT, Gemini, CoPilot) and Internal Communication between teams.

***Remember it’s a Relationship tool.***

2. Process First, Features Second

Fancy features won’t help if your sales, marketing and service processes are unclear or inconsistent.

If you have never sat with your teams and created Current State Process Maps - we strongly advise that you do. It’s a great way of on-boarding all your people to the changes coming. If they have contributed to the process mapping and have felt heard and seen - adoption rate
dramatically increases.

3. CRM Is Not an IT Project

Leaving CRM to IT leads to poor adoption. Business teams must take the lead and IT support.

I believe an Internal CRM Champion (or RevOps person) needs to be on-boarded or promoted to ensure successful adoption.

"AI will revolutionise everything."

Sound familiar? It should! It's everywhere right now. But here's the truth: most AI projects don't fail because the AI is bad. They fail because the underlying data is poor.

AI isn't magic. Actually, it's quite the opposite. You're only ever as good as the data it can pull on the moment you prompt it. And if your CRM is full of duplicates, half-finished records, and information someone keyed in wrong six months ago, your AI will give you confidently wrong answers, beautifully formatted.

Rubbish in, rubbish out. Simple as that.

The fix? Two things most businesses skip:

1️⃣ Clean, structured data: your CRM doesn't magically stay clean. Just like an office. Someone has to look after it.

2️⃣ A CRM Champion: somebody whose actual job it is to keep the data trustworthy. In small businesses and solopreneurs, that's usually you. In medium-sized businesses, it needs to be a named role. Without that person, even the most expensive CRM becomes a very expensive address book.

And here's the bonus most people miss: strong systems make GDPR and compliance easier - not harder. Operational maturity and compliance maturity go hand in hand. One feeds the other.

Are your systems causing chaos? AI hasn't brought them altogether in harmony as you thought? 🤯

If your sales, marketing, and customer service teams are working in silos, it’s time to make a change. This is an older video and doesn't mention AI - but the core message is the same. Even with AI working within our business systems - we still need to create a unified approach to our data and support AI in creating great insights and feedback.

In this video I talk about how a CRM system can bring all your data together, making your business more efficient and your customers happier. It is still needed guys! will thank you for it!

10 years... an entire decade of transformation!

When I launched my first website in May 2016, I couldn’t have imagined where that road would take me. Today, I'm celebrating a journey that's taken me from solo consultant to trusted strategic independent and tech agnostic partner for organisations navigating digital transformation and CRM/AI implementation.

From opening our Boxworks office in 2017, to a complete rebrand in 2020, to returning to UCD for postgraduate qualifications in Digital Transformation Management and Project Management, every milestone has been about deepening my expertise and delivering real impact for our clients.

Some of the highlights include:
👉 first launch in May 2016
👉 full rebrand in 2020
👉 features in leading publications
👉 guest appearances on podcasts
👉 recognition for our online presence, and our contribution to STEM
👉 supporting many, many amazing businesses and organisations

But my own real measure of success is in the relationships built with the incredible people I've had the privilege to work with - and the transformations we've achieved together.

So - here's to a decade of growth, learning, and partnership. And to many more years of turning business challenges into strategic opportunities.

Thank you to everyone who's been part of this journey! 🎉

Without governance, AI and CRMs "drift". The number of fields multiplies, stages get reinvented, and reporting stops matching reality. Then leadership loses trust - and decisions revert to gut feel.

A *CRM Champion* prevents that by owning standards, aligning teams, and keeping the roadmap moving 💪

AI shouldn’t be a leap of faith. It should be a calculated step. I had the absolute pleasure of doing a deep-dive info session with the brilliant Margaret Julian, a leading Compliance Specialist. Together, we explored the "missing middle" of Business and Digital Transformation—the foundations you need before you even think about hitting the "AI Start" button.

The message of our session wasn't to fear AI. It was to embrace it with confidence. But to get there, you need four non-negotiable foundations in place:

1. Data: The Fuel ⛽ AI is only as smart as the information you give it. We discussed why "Clean Data" is the difference between a tool that helps you scale and one that generates hallucinations. At ncco, we focus on creating that "single source of truth"—eliminating silos so your AI has high-quality, integrated data to learn from.

2. Systems: The Engine ⚙️ You can’t automate chaos. We looked at why robust Workflows and Audit Trails are essential. Without a documented process, AI has no map to follow. Both Margaret and I can help you audit your current systems to ensure they are "AI-ready" and fully traceable.

3. Security: The Shield 🛡️ Innovation shouldn't come at the cost of your reputation. We dived into how protecting your data isn't just a IT task—it’s a brand-preservation task. If your customers can't trust how you use their data, the best AI in the world won't save your bottom line.

4. Compliance: The Compass 🧭 This is where Margaret’s expertise is game-changing. We discussed Evidence and Governance—ensuring that your move into AI meets every regulatory standard. Compliance isn’t a "handbrake" on your business; it’s the governance that allows you to move fast without crashing.

The Bottom Line: AI is a powerful accelerator, but you have to be pointing in the right direction first. At ncco, we provide the independent, tech-agnostic advice to help you build these foundations from the inside out. If you require GDPR and Compliance support - please reach out to Margaret (her website details are in the comment below):
