UCG can transform domestic coal and lignite into Syngas that serves as a feedstock for ammonia and other essential chemicals used in fertiliser production. By creating an indigenous pathway to these critical inputs, the technology can support India's agricultural needs, reduce dependence on imported feedstocks and strengthen the foundations of domestic fertiliser security.

At the Odisha Metals & Mining Conclave 2026 in Bhubaneswar, GMDC joined industry and Government stakeholders in discussions on the future of mining under the theme, “Metals & Mining: Building Blocks for Viksit Odisha.”

India’s dependence on imported energy and industrial feedstocks represents a significant opportunity for domestic resource development. UCG can convert indigenous coal and lignite into Syngas with the potential to substitute a portion of imports across gas and downstream products. With an estimated ₹2.77 lakh crore import substitution potential, UCG could help retain greater economic value within the country while strengthening energy security and advancing resource self-reliance.
