Same market, same month. One set of sectors lifted, others got squeezed.

In August, the Nifty 50 fell 1.1% while the Midcap 100 rose 2.2%.
Nifty Metal rose 3.8% for the month as commodity prices stayed high. FMCG fell 6.3% on costlier palm oil and crude linked inputs.

Costly oil and metals may lift the companies that sell commodities, and may squeeze the ones that buy them, like automobiles and consumer goods.
A single index level hides how differently the parts of the market move. That is the case for spreading money across asset classes: equity for long term growth, debt for potential steadiness, and multi asset options for balance, in a mix that suits your goals and risk comfort.

The sector(s)/stock(s) mentioned in this video do not constitute any recommendation of the same, and ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund may or may not have any future positions in the sector(s)/stock(s).

The RBI changed nothing this month. The rate you actually borrow at still moved. Here is why those are different things.

On the 5th of August, the RBI kept the repo rate at 5.25% with a neutral stance. Even so, India's 10 year government bond yield climbed through the month to about 6.97% by month end.

The MPC minutes showed members saying policy may need to tighten if inflation risks materialize. Brent crude climbed back towards $90, and expectations of higher US rates kept global yields elevated.

The repo rate is what the RBI announces. The bond yield is what the market decides every single day. Bond prices move opposite to yields, so rising yields make older, lower interest bonds worth less, and debt fund values follow.

Invest, then go to sleep. That is the pitch, and it is deliberately not for everyone.

This fund is built for the investor who does not want to track the market day to day, and would rather hand over both the allocation call and the scheme selection. It is equally clear about who it is not for. If you want to take your own call on how much sits in equity and how much in debt, and you enjoy monitoring that actively, this is not the product for you. That's how Mr. Dharmesh Kakkad - Senior Fund Manager at ICICI Prudential AMC, managing the ICICI Prudential Dynamic Asset Allocation Active FOF - explains who the fund is really meant for, to host Kushal Lodha, in this episode of the Senior Fund Manager Series.

Every time you move money from one scheme to another, a little bit leaks out.

An investor managing this on his own has to keep monitoring the allocation and keep switching in and out, and every one of those switches is a tax event. Inside a fund of funds, the rebalancing between schemes does not create a tax liability for the investor. That liability arises only when the investor redeems from the fund itself. So along with taking the timing decision off the investor's plate, the structure also makes the rebalancing more tax efficient. That's how Mr. Dharmesh Kakkad - Senior Fund Manager at ICICI Prudential AMC, managing the ICICI Prudential Dynamic Asset Allocation Active FOF - explains why the structure works the way it does, to host Kushal Lodha, in this episode of the Senior Fund Manager Series.

Gold and silver just had their best month since January. And almost none of it had anything to do with India.

Gold opened August near ₹1,42,000 per 10 grams, spiked to about ₹1,63,000 around the 21st, and closed the month near ₹1,55,000, up 9 to 10%.
Silver ended near ₹2,42,000 per kg, up 14%.

Central banks bought 289 tonnes of gold in the June quarter, the strongest second quarter on record. Soft US inflation data early in the month shifted rate expectations, before easing back in early September.

Gold and silver pay no interest, so their prices often move with what rates are expected to do next.

Bond yields came down. So the fund moved money towards equity. Here is the logic.

The decision is never about equity on its own, it is about equity relative to debt. When the G-Sec yield falls, debt becomes less attractive, and the model tells you to move money out of it. But if the equity yield is falling at the same time, you have to check which one has fallen more. Over the last year or two the G-Sec yield has come down relatively more than the equity yield, because equity returns in that period have been muted, and that gap is what has increased the relative attractiveness of equity. That's how Mr. Dharmesh Kakkad - Senior Fund Manager at ICICI Prudential AMC, managing the ICICI Prudential Dynamic Asset Allocation Active FOF - explains how the equity and debt call is actually made, to host Kushal Lodha, in this episode of the Senior Fund Manager Series.
