Specialist (Post 9/9)

Dedication to a specialty defines these people who are meticulous and disciplined in pursuing their domain of knowledge. They are Technically smart with answers to even the toughest of situations. They drill down into their own domain and seek expertise in own field by referencing and cross-referencing the body of knowledge.

They maintain a high professional standard and exhibit an enormous commitment to their work at hand. They are so steeped in their own domain that they pay less attention to the people aspects of the work. They pride themselves in their status as experts and would defend their Technical position with their life.

They do come up with solutions that meet the extraordinary needs of the Team as they serve as a good referee to vexing problems. They break deadlocks and enable the flow of knowledge to Teams that can apply their specialist inputs. Their decisions are sound as long as the matter pertains to their domain. However, they could get locked in diversion trying to prove their point and sap the energy of others and cause delays as well.

A medical Consultant interacting on Civic Health issues would be a good example of the Specialist at work.

Completer Finisher (Post 8/9)

Imagine a member who is constantly stating out the workflow process along with the work standards and the procedures to follow – this is the domain of the Completer Finisher. He is the Quality person in each team and he hates sloppy or shoddy work. They are concerned about work completion though they may not be so heavily driven by time. However, they are driven by Quality.

They are Introverted, self-driven and task-focused and their gratification comes when a job is well done. A Perfectionist and therefore intolerant of those with a casual disposition.
They are seen micro-managing the tasks and keep raising hell on deviations. They respond to issues with standards and operating procedures with very little attention to human issues. They ‘d rather do the work themselves than delegate to others. When they do delegate, they ensure that standards are met by constant monitoring and follow-through. In Assembly operations, you will typically find Quality Assurance people playing this role.

Implementer (Post 7/9)

They have a high sense of self-discipline, practical common sense and operate out of a time-driven mindset. Implementers are people who are objective-driven and therefore may subjugate their own needs for the overall purpose of the Team.

They are extremely useful people to be around the Team, as they get down to plodding on the tasks that need to get done, even if it means a great deal of discomfort for themselves. They have a single focus and are reliable with a high capacity for application. They move in projects with a practical solution orientation and as they look for feasibility when encountered with problems.

They are unilateral in pursuit and therefore may tend to be rigid and not open to new ideas. They work through established procedures and mandates with diverting from their task. They can get excessively psyched by deadlines that they may rave and rant and make others work life miserable.

Finally, they finish the job in its complete details and won’t rest until the final bell is rung. Even after the bell is rung, they’ll be found in clearing up the work tables and areas. They are finicky and painstaking in their work routine.

Team Worker (Post 6/9)

In every team, you’ll find a member who is very genial, sensitive and caring about others that the team leans on the person for support and acceptance. Team Workers are people-centric and are focused on ensuring everyone is feeling comfortable and attended to. They prop up members who are lagging or in trouble. They are flexible and adaptable to situations and people and operate diplomatically and sensitively in handling people's issues.

Since they hate interpersonal problems from surfacing, they avoid conflicts and engage in harmonizing for results. They are perceptive and have the capacity for the patience and understanding that individuals need during difficult times.
They create bonds amongst members and often using the trust bestowed to get conflicts resolved and tasks to be coordinated effectively.

Since they are so concerned about people’s feelings, they tend to be indecisive and not very task-focused.

Monitor Evaluator (Post 5/9)

Serious, prudent, cold and aloof monitor Evaluators bring in the Thinking energy to the Team through the use of logic and reason to situations. They prefer to be deep, slow and deliberate in decision making and are extremely astute in spotting flaws in plans and ideas.

Their critical thinking abilities ensure taking all factors into consideration and thus they enable the Team from not taking the wrong decision.

They are strategic and capable of thinking through complex issues by drilling down to details even though they may appear dry, boring and a bit of a wet blanket to others.
Other members may find them over critical or based on too many facts but in the end, Teams find their profile to be of immense use in achieving productive results or at least in mitigating losses.

Their connectivity to others is primarily through the task and therefore other members would look at them as an enigma and would find it hard to pierce through their external façade. Typically a Corporate Accountant or Auditor would remind you of a Monitor Evaluator by behavior. A cold fish but a useful member!

Shapers (Post 4/9)

Shapers are the quintessential Energy source of the TEAM. They bring in a high level of `can do’ attitude and thrive on busting obstacles. They are aggressive as they have strong drives for achievement and can never take `No’ for an answer. Extroverted and challenge seeking they tend to direct and dominate other members as a Task driven, `no-nonsense ‘manager, much like Asim Premji of WIPRO.

They could be insensitive to people's issues and are argumentative and confrontational in approach. This may impact their interpersonal relations with others. But their competitive spirit brushes people issues to focus on the task.
They are never found wanting in speed, actions, and decisions as they provide the energy to bust obstacles by proposing and acting on bye pass routes, which come easily to them. They take decisions that may be unpopular but nevertheless ensure positive actions towards desired goals.

Coordinator (Post 3/9)

These are the Social leaders in the group who are dominant but not domineering and who take charge of the group activities to take off. They are mature, trusting, confident through they identify talent within the Team and delegate responsibilities with ease.
They step in when situations get awkward or during conflicts, where they bring alignment through the statement of the common objectives. Their articulation is moderate and their interventions are objective as to generate necessary acceptance from Members.
They are adept at managing the diverse skills of the team members and are often seen allocating roles and tasks appropriately to members. They are open to being consulted and yet empowering for actions as they direct the attention of others to a single goal much like A B Vajpayeeduring NBA I & II.
At times they could be so dominant that other members function as an extension of the Coordinators Ego. They hold a powerful role and therefore could be in conflict with other significant role members.

Resource Investigator (Post 2/9)
Characteristics:
They bring the nervous energy into Teams with their enthusiasm and abilities to quickly connect to people both internally and externally. They bring in the capabilities of sniffing out opportunities and can be relied on to bring in external contacts in abundance.

They are quick to appreciate good ideas from all sources and work towards applying them immediately for results. They are inquisitive, extroverted and work well under pressure. If not under pressure or stimulation from others, they tend to be more relaxed and social than productive.
Teams need resources from the outside world and the Resource Investigator moves the world to bring in ideas, materials, information or just relationships such as Mr.Jayashankar –Minister for External Affairs.
They maintain masses of contacts from which they draw their resources. They keep a sense of enthusiasm going in the team by constantly pointing out to immense possibilities for external sources.
Prone to socializing, they need to be ensured against becoming `laid back’ and easy-going at work. Their main contributions to the team take the form of useful relationships and resources that can be mobilized quickly for effective deployment for results.

Plant (Post 1/9)
Characteristics:
Every team needs Ideas from which it can create or simply to stop it from getting into a routine and monotonous rut in working. Plants are the Bright guys who bring in innovative thoughts and ideas by peering into the possibilities of the here and now and in the future.

Lone wolves they prefer to use their cerebral qualities to think out of the box and seek solutions using their superior intuition and unorthodox methods. Dhoni’s helicopter shot for instance.
They revel in solving complex problems and are an asset especially during the initial stages of a project or when a problem rears its ugly head that defies solution.
They are touchy about criticism and need handling with a velvet glove to get the best out of them in a team. They can be seen as somewhat of an oddball by others by the bizarre ideas and tendency to sulk in isolation, at times. They can remain at the theoretical level and find it a challenge to get down to the practicalities of putting the ideas into implementation.

For the creative spark and innovative breakthroughs, these are the people the Team can lean on.
