"Let's look more like the big players in our category" is a request I hear often, and I usually push back on it.

Copying the look of an established leader without their scale, budget or history rarely reads as ambition.
It usually reads as a smaller business trying to borrow credibility it hasn't earned yet - and customers can often sense the gap.

I'd rather build something that looks exactly like where you actually are, done well.

Try this: say your price out loud to yourself, just the number, no context attached.

Now imagine a stranger hearing only that - no backstory, no relationship, no explanation of what's included.

Does it still sound reasonable? Or does it suddenly feel high without the story wrapped around it?

Check your website or proposal - does the price show up before the reason for it, or after?
Sequence matters more than most businesses realise.

We like to believe customers pick the best option.
Mostly, they pick the option that made deciding easiest.

Clear pricing instead of "contact us for a quote."
A same-day reply instead of a three-day silence.
A process that didn't make them chase you for basic information.

Quality gets you considered. Friction decides who actually gets chosen.

Before improving the product again, check what you're quietly making people work for.

A brand can say one thing… and still make people feel something completely different.

You may want to be seen as premium, trustworthy, professional, or innovative.
But if your website, communication, visuals, packaging, and customer experience are sending different signals, the customer is left to figure out the meaning on their own.

And that’s where branding gets difficult.

Because customers don’t experience your brand in isolated pieces.
They connect all those little signals and form an impression.

Your brand doesn’t just communicate what you say.
It communicates what all your signals collectively make people believe.

So ask yourself:

Are your brand signals saying the same thing?

Sochiye.

"Let's hire someone senior to fix this" is a tempting shortcut when a team is struggling.

I've watched it fail more often than it's worked.
A talented person dropped into unclear direction, weak process or poor communication doesn't fix those things by being talented.

They usually just become frustrated by them faster than everyone else did.

Fix the system first.
Then hire the person who'll thrive in it.

Here's a test that takes fifteen seconds and tells you something your own marketing never will.

Open Google.
Type your business name.
Don't hit enter yet - look at what autocomplete finishes it with.

Reviews? Complaints? A "vs" comparison against a competitor? Pricing questions? That's not language you wrote. It's the exact thing real people are already searching before they've spoken to you.

Your website tells people what you want them to think. Autocomplete tells you what they actually are thinking.

Try it - screenshot what you find.

For four or five years of running the agency, I quoted less than I actually believed the work was worth.
I told myself it was about building relationships, staying flexible, being reasonable.

Looking back, it was fear - fear that saying my real number out loud would make the client walk away before we'd even started.

The day I finally said the number I actually believed in, in a real meeting, nobody blinked.

No pushback, no hesitation, no lost client.
I'd spent years bracing for a reaction that was never actually coming.

One signal may not mean much.

But when the same signals keep appearing again and again...
the brain starts connecting them.
And slowly, a meaning begins to form.

That is one of the real jobs of branding.
Not simply to create a logo.
Not simply to look good.
Not simply to create awareness.

But to shape what your brand comes to mean in someone's mind.

Sochiye.

Loyalty programs get pitched as a retention fix.

I don't think they usually are. A points system doesn't repair a forgettable experience - it just puts a small discount on top of one.

If customers are leaving, the real question isn't "how do we reward them for staying." It's "why weren't they attached enough to stay without a reward."

Fix that first. The loyalty program, if you still want one, works much better on top of something already worth being loyal to.

Patagonia's “Don't Buy This Jacket” ad became memorable partly because it sounded like the opposite of what advertising is supposed to say.

But the message wasn't random provocation.
It was consistent with a broader environmental position the company had been building for years.

That's the part worth studying.

A bold statement without underlying behaviour is just advertising.
A bold statement backed by consistent choices can become positioning.
