Exactly 20 years ago today—August 24, 2006—the solar system as we knew it changed forever. 🪐

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) voted to reclassify Pluto as a ‘dwarf planet,’ abruptly ending its 76-year run as the ninth planet. But the decision was far from unanimous. With only about 424 out of 10,000 astronomers present for the final vote, and a controversial new rule about “clearing the neighborhood,” the debate is still burning strong today.

The controversy only grew in 2015 when NASA’s New Horizons probe flew by and revealed a stunning, geologically active world covered in water-ice mountains and nitrogen glaciers. 🏔️❄️

Tomorrow marks National Space Day — the anniversary of the moment Vikram touched down near the lunar south pole and India became the 4th country to soft-land on the Moon.

Same launch date. Two completely different universes. 🚀

Aug 20, 1975: Viking 1 launches for Mars, landing the following year to become the first US spacecraft to operate successfully on another planet’s surface.

Aug 20, 1977: Voyager 2 launches, and never stops going. Jupiter in 1979. Saturn in 1981. Then Uranus and Neptune, the only spacecraft in history to visit either. In 2018 it crossed into interstellar space, and it’s still transmitting today, over 20 billion km from home.

One mission stayed. One never came back. Same date on the calendar, nothing else in common.

79 years of independence. A lifetime in space. 🇮🇳

From a satellite launched on a borrowed Soviet rocket in 1975 to a lander touching down where no country ever had, near the Moon’s south pole in 2023, India’s space story is really a story about starting from nothing and choosing to build anyway.

Aryabhata → Chandrayaan-1 → Mangalyaan → Chandrayaan-2 → Chandrayaan-3 → Gaganyaan. Six missions, one flag, and a story that’s still being written.
