Special Voter Enrolment Drive Continues Across Kakching District

Kakching, October 15, 2026: The drive is being conducted under the supervision of District Election Officer and Deputy Commissioner Angeline Renita R, IAS.

In the 39-Sugnoo Assembly Constituency, an election team led by Assistant Electoral Registration Officer Laitonjam Biken Singh visited different locations to identify left-out eligible voters, first-time voters and young electors. The team also raised awareness about the importance of electoral participation.

Meanwhile, Block Level Officers in the 36-Wabgai Assembly Constituency conducted house-to-house surveys and used a mobile public awareness system to inform residents about voter enrolment.

The election team in the 37-Kakching Assembly Constituency also carried out door-to-door surveys to identify eligible citizens who had not yet been enrolled.

The initiative aims to ensure that no eligible citizen is left out of the electoral rolls and to promote inclusive participation in the democratic process.

Burning Straw After Harvest Degrades Soil Fertility, Pollutes Air – Munal Meitei

Imphal, Oct 15, 2026 (IMPHAL): There is nothing good about burning stubble after harvesting. Burning stubble degrades soil fertility and pollutes the air. Burning stubble in fields after harvest is an act that should not be done, as it is very harmful, said environmentalist Dr. Naorem Munal Meitei in an interview with this daily.

With the onset of the harvest season, farmers have started harvesting paddy, either by machine or manually. The burning of stubble after harvest is seen in many places in the State. On the pros and cons of burning stubble, when this daily met environmentalist Dr. Naorem Munal Meitei, he said that burning stubble causes great damage to our surrounding environment. Farmers are also seen burning stubble under trees, which not only burns the stubble but also kills trees, posing a big threat to the environment. There is a need for all of us to understand the disadvantages of burning stubble.

47 Fish Farmers Receive Certificates at Awareness Programme in Churachandpur

Churachandpur, October 15, 2026: Fish farmer certificates were distributed to 47 beneficiaries at an awareness-cum-distribution programme held at S. Kawtlian village in Churachandpur district on Thursday under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan 2026.

Organised by the District Administration through the District Fishery Office, the programme was conducted under the supervision of District Fishery Officer Md Ziaur Rahaman. Around 65 fish farmers attended the awareness session.

Participants were briefed on government assistance and opportunities available to fish farmers, including benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and fish farmers’ insurance schemes.

The initiative aimed to improve awareness of government support programmes and help local fish farmers understand the available assistance and insurance coverage.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Hails Maram, Tadubi and Mao Residents for Resumption of Free Highway Movement

Senapati, October 15, 2026: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Thursday commended the people of Maram, Tadubi and Mao in Senapati district for their cooperation in restoring free movement along the National Highway connecting Imphal with Guwahati through Dimapur, stating that the resumption had given a boost to Manipur’s economy.

The Chief Minister was speaking at the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan held at Tadubi local ground in Senapati district. He said he had personally decided to attend the programme in the 49-Tadubi Assembly Constituency, which has remained without an elected representative since the death of former MLA N. Kayisii in 2025.

84 BSF Personnel Admitted to RIMS Due to Food Poisoning

Imphal: 84 personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF), who arrived in Imphal yesterday from Chandrigarh, were admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal today at noon after experiencing nausea and vomiting due to food poisoning.

According to reports from the hospital, the condition of the personnel brought in with nausea and vomiting is currently stable and out of danger. Only five among them will remain admitted to the hospital for further treatment, while all others will be discharged later this evening.

JNU Former Students & Research Scholars Stand by Prof Bimol Akoijam, Question Fairness of Dismissal

October 15, 2026 : Former MPhil and PhD students of Prof. A. Bimol Akoijam of the Centre for the Study of Social Systems (CSSS), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), have expressed solidarity with the professor, alleging that his dismissal was rushed, procedurally flawed, and politically charged.

In a statement issued on October 15, the former students rejected the allegations and the major punishment imposed on Prof. Akoijam, questioning the fairness of the proceedings and alleging violations of confidentiality under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, commonly known as the POSH Act.

MP Bimol Leaves Imphal for Delhi to Join Police Probe into JNU Harassment Case

October 15, 2026 : Congress MP from Inner Manipur, Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, on Thursday left Imphal for New Delhi in response to a Delhi Police notice asking him to join the investigation into a sexual harassment case involving allegations levelled against him by students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Speaking to reporters at Imphal airport before his departure, Bimol Akoijam expressed confidence in the judicial process, stating that justice would prevail. He said his fight against injustice would extend beyond the allegations against him to the suffering endured by his community over several decades.

Delhi Police issued a notice to Akoijam on October 14, directing him to appear for questioning in connection with the case. The notice followed the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) at Vasant Kunj North police station on October 11, based on a complaint forwarded by JNU’s chief security officer.

The professor has denied the allegations and questioned the university’s inquiry process, describing the complaints as politically motivated. He has also indicated his intention to challenge the university’s decision through legal channels.

The Delhi Police investigation is ongoing. The allegations against Bimol remain subject to the criminal justice process, and the registration of an FIR does not by itself establish guilt.

Manipur’s Valley Wears a Deserted Look as Black Day Shutdown Paralyses Normal Life

October 15, 2026 : Normal life across the valley districts of Manipur was severely affected on Thursday as shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained shut in observance of National Black Day, marking the merger of Manipur with India in 1949.

The valley districts, including Imphal, wore a deserted look, with very low traffic on major roads and minimal public movement. Markets and commercial establishments remained closed, while schools and other educational institutions also stayed shut, bringing normal activities to a standstill.

The usually busy streets of Imphal presented an unusually quiet scene, with only a few vehicles seen plying on the roads. Commercial areas that generally witness heavy public movement remained largely deserted throughout the day.

The shutdown was called by the Coordination Committee (CorCom) from 6 am to 6 pm to mark October 15 as National Black Day.

The day is observed by certain organisations in Manipur to express their opposition to the state’s merger with India, which formally came into effect on October 15, 1949, following the signing of the Merger Agreement by Maharaja Bodhchandra on September 21, 1949.

CJP to Hold ‘Lehrado Tiranga’ Protest in Delhi’s Connaught Place on October 16: CJP’s Abhijeet Dipke

October 15, 2026 (Imphal): “Waving our national flag is a fundamental expression of our patriotism, not a criminal act,” stated CJP (Cockroach Janta Party) founder Abhijeet Dipke, who asked all his supporters to gather at Central Park in Connaught Place on Friday with the Tricolour.

After landing in Delhi, the CJP founder immediately announced the message through social media. The CJP founder also said that the arrest of his associates, Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka, in Nagpur hours earlier was an attempt by the government to impose an undeclared emergency in the country.

In the message, Abhijeet also said that the state’s heavy-handed crackdown on dissent would not silence people. “I urge every citizen who believes in democratic rights to reach Central Park this Friday, carrying the Tricolour. If the administration wants to arrest peaceful citizens simply for holding the national flag, let them prepare their jails.”

He also asked, “Has waving the national flag become a sin under PM Narendra Modi’s rule?” Dipke asked, adding, “I want to tell Narendra Modi: If you want to clamp an emergency, then have the guts to make it official. Why are you enforcing an unofficial emergency by detaining people for five days just for waving the Tricolour at Jantar Mantar?”

UFO and Fire Service Department Hold Fire Safety Training at Sinam Khul

October 14, 2026 : The Universal Friendship Organisation (UFO), in collaboration with the Manipur Fire Service Department, organised a basic fire and life safety training programme at Sinam Khul Community Hall in Imphal East on Wednesday.

The programme was attended by Fire Service Department Director Laishram Nabachandra, UFO president RK Sana Parihal, secretary general Y. Meiraba Angom, and other officials and village representatives.

Addressing the gathering, Nabachandra stressed the importance of imparting fire safety skills and raising public awareness to prevent fire accidents and minimise damage during emergencies. He assured continued departmental support for similar initiatives by UFO.
