On the morning of August 16, 2026, approximately at 9:30 AM, a licensed pistol discharged by accident while undergoing a pre-boarding security check at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi, wounding two of the screening staff. The gun belonged to Kamlesh Kedarnath Rai, a 55-year-old man from the Azamgarh district and a former BMC corporator, who was travelling to Mumbai with his wife on Air India Express flight IX-1810. The discharge took place as part of the security screening and led to an immediate reaction from the airport authorities and the security personnel.

The disaster involving Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad was more than just an aviation accident; it was a tragedy which raised serious questions regarding aircraft systems, cockpit operations, safety procedures, maintenance and human factors as well as emergency response.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India on June 12, 2025, crashed a short time after taking off from Ahmedabad en route to London, and the incident resulted in 260 deaths, among them people who were on the ground.
But behind the devastating loss of lives there is a much more significant question: What precisely took place in those crucial seconds after take-off?
A study concentrating on aviation must not remain based on speculation and should instead look at the available evidence such as flight data, cockpit recordings, aircraft systems, engine performance, control inputs, the maintenance history and the sequence of events that led to the crash.
The initial investigation had supplied some factual information, but the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has carried out a more thorough examination. The final report is still awaiting completion as of August 2026.
The analysis in question therefore goes beyond the headlines in order to understand the aircraft, the technology, the human factors and the sequence of events which turned a normal departure into one of India's most severe aviation disasters.
BEYOND AI-171:
It is not enough to consider what took place; we must also examine why it occurred, what lessons can be drawn from it, and what changes are necessary to avoid a similar tragedy in the future.

On August 4, 2026, Air India flight AI2379 was traveling from Phuket to New Delhi. It had 137 passengers and 8 crew members on board when it suddenly lost 300 feet in altitude over Odisha, resulting in injuries to 17 to 24 people. Airlines Airbus A321, operating as Flight 4345 from Denver (DEN) to Los Angeles (LAX), struck and fatally injured an unidentified person during takeoff.

Preliminary reports indicate that the person had climbed over the airport's perimeter security fence and entered the airfield illegally. They made their way onto Runway 17 Left. As the aircraft accelerated for takeoff, the flight crew could not avoid the person on the runway.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the passengers or crew members aboard the aircraft were hurt. The incident prompted a swift response from airport authorities, law enforcement, and federal investigators. They launched an investigation into how the person accessed the restricted airfield and the circumstances of the tragedy.
