India’s Home Ministry, led by Amit Shah, has announced a major relief for non-Muslim migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Under the new decision, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians who entered India before December 31, 2024, to escape religious persecution can stay without passports or valid travel documents. This includes people who arrived without proper papers or whose passports have expired. The move directly aligns with the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which aims to provide long-term protection and a path to Indian citizenship for these persecuted minorities. The exemption ensures that such migrants will not face legal action for lacking documents, offering them stability and security as they await citizenship processing.
