Plastic Chokes Bengal: Rivers, Air, and Lives at Risk
The yearly load of plastic wastes in West Bengal is in the vicinity of 330,000 tonnes, and the daily amount of plastic waste generated by Kolkata is more than 400 tonnes. This pollution is so intense it is suffocating rivers like the Hooghly, where concentrations of microplastics reach as high as 428 particles per kilogram of sediment. Airborne microplastics — some 5,700 particles per cubic metre — are highly dangerous, exerting health threats such as respiratory and heart problems. Mismanagement of plastic and burned plastic result in toxic gases which pollute the air and affect public health.” It’s the kind that’s clogging up Bengal’s ecosystems, wildlife and urban infrastructure at an alarming pace; that’s polluting the coastlines and defiling local food sources by taking the form of microplastics that have infiltrated the food chain.
