On this day in 1928, Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman discovered the Raman effect.

The Raman effect is the change in the wavelength of light that occurs when a light beam is deflected by molecules. The phenomenon is named after the Indian physicist, who led experiments on the scattering of light.

When light meets particles that are smaller than the light's wavelength, the light spreads in different directions. This occurs, for example, when light packets – photons – encounter molecules in a gas. Raman discovered that a small portion of the scattered light acquires other wavelengths than that of the original light. This is because some of the incoming photons' energy can be transferred to a molecule, giving it a higher level of energy. Among other things, the phenomenon is used to analyse different types of material.

Spice oil and spice oleoresins are the spice products which are of great demand in export market. In spice oil and oleoresin industry, 80%–90% of spices are left over as spent residue, a by-product which are not commercially exploited for food application.

At present, a small percentage of spice spents find application in veterinary feeds. For example:-

De-oiled spent spices, also known as turmeric spent, can be used as animal feed. Some of the benefits of using de-oiled spent spices in animal feed include:

• Anti-inflammatory effects
• Antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal benefits
• Promoting heart and liver health
• Promoting digestive health
• Antioxidant properties
• Preventing cataracts

Poultry Feeds :

In addition, turmeric has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, which can help boost the immune system of poultry and reduce the need for antibiotics. Studies have shown that turmeric can improve growth performance, and gut health, and reduce the incidence of disease in poultry.

There is a continuous increase in the quantity of production and export of spice oils and oleoresins.

Indian spice oil and oleoresin export has increased from 7265 tons in the year 2011–12 to 20,635 tons in the year 2020 - 24. It also indicates that the amount of spice spents is also increasing year by year posing problems in disposing and environmental pollution. Currently, the amount of spent residue of celery disposed off as waste is around 1200 tons annually in India.

Strategies are needed for the effective utilization of industrial wastes to prevent environmental pollution. Spices contain 15%–55% crude fibre (Murphy, 1978) and not much work has been carried out with regard to qualitative and quantitative nature of dietary fibre (DF) of spices. In recent times, health benefits of dietary fibre has resulted in a huge demand for food products rich in fibre. Agronomic industrial by-products without much commercial value are finding significant demand as new sources of dietary fibre.
