**Co-pay in health insurance: What do you actually pay?**
Your health insurance policy covers hospitalisation. But what if it says you must pay 20% of the eligible claim yourself?
That’s a co-payment, or co-pay.
For example, if your eligible claim is ₹2 lakh and your policy has a 20% co-pay, you would pay ₹40,000, while the insurer pays the remaining ₹1.6 lakh, subject to the policy’s terms and limits.
Before choosing a policy, check:
- Whether co-pay applies
- The percentage you must pay
- Whether it applies to every claim or only in specific situations
A policy’s sum insured tells you how much cover you have. The co-pay clause helps determine how much you may have to pay yourself.
**Understand your policy before you need to use it.**
