When does hard work stop working?

Many of my wards (AIMers) are now hitting this mark in their careers and I thought to talk to them through this post.

The first decade rewards effort, more hours, more ex*****on, more hustle.

But mid-career? The rules quietly change.

As I explain in this carousel, growth now depends on influence, judgment, simplifying complexity, earning trust, not the number of tasks you finish.

Many careers stagnate simply because people continue operating like their junior-year version, long after the role demands a different operating system.

If you're feeling stuck despite working harder than ever, you're likely at this inflection point.

Recognise the shift.

Upgrade how you work.

Because in mid-career, thinking accelerates you more than doing ever will.

Once you have mounted the treadmill of the corporate world, please do not avoid difficult conversations.

- We cannot deliver on the promised date (client)
- This year you won’t be promoted (team mate)
- There has been a goof up in the project. (Client)
- We will not win this deal (boss)
- We will have to raise a change request for this work. (Client)
- We chose the other OEM (partner)

Best to communicate early, clearly and with empathy. Its the best way to enhance trust.

Do read my post below and share difficult conversation examples from your life.

There are broadly 2 kinds of professionals.
1. Ambitious
2. Contented.

Both are needed in the corporate world. And there is no harm in choosing either. In fact some professionals could choose to toggle from one to the other mid career. Its OKAY!

But this post is more for the Ambitious kinds.

Let me know your views on my post below. It will be great to read different perspectives.

Socho Kuch. Bolo Kuch. Karo Kuch.

(Think something. Say something else . Do something else.)

That classic Kader Khan line from Bollywood still hits — because let’s be honest, this is how insecure leaders roll.
They want to keep their team off balance and guessing. Insecurity is by design.

But secure leaders? They play a different game.
They think deeply.
Speak less, but mean more.
And act only when it really matters.

Because real communication isn’t 100% about words.
It’s 90% tone, timing, trust, and truth.
Sometimes the most powerful message is hidden in a pause.

That’s what my latest carousel is about.

The 90% Problem in Communication.

It’s not what you say.
It’s how you make people feel when you say it.

So next time you talk, ask yourself:
Are you trying to sound smart?
Or trying to be understood?

With this video I pause on telling you the What (of Sales Ecosystem) and show you the How of using your ecosystem.

In most MNC firm sales reviews, the conversation revolves around what

What's booked?

What's billed?

What's collected?

BBC

But the real growth happens when managers start asking how questions. Coaching discussion.

How are meetings improving?

How strong are your relationships across the ecosystem consultants, analysts, alliance partners?

Because focusing only on the "what" makes you a reporter.

Focusing on the "how" makes you a leader.

Your first 90 days in any role are not about proving brilliance, they're about building balance.

It's when you listen more than you speak, respect every colleague (not just your boss), decode the real culture, and earn trust through quick wins.

Many youngsters rush to impress in the early years. The wiser ones rush to understand. Because when you truly understand, the impact you create will always last longer.

What's the one lesson you learned in your first 90 days?

HIRE Act? Get fired up.

We have lived through Y2K, visa bans, recessions, dot-com crash. Each time the headlines screamed “This is the end.” Each time, Indian IT came back stronger.

If your only strength is low cost, you’ll always be vulnerable.

If you build on trust, depth, and human qualities, no law can erase your value.

Policies will keep changing. Markets will keep shaking.
But your mindset decides whether you panic… or rise.

Because price can be taxed. Trust cannot.

In my last video I spoke of the need to build relationships with sales folks of Competitors in your account.

But how do you do that? Where do you start?

In this video I talk about some of the things that have worked for me.

Having said this, building a human relationship based on Trust works all the time.

We can compete with trust and not always deceit.
