Have you ever wondered how reliable our digital maps truly are?
Google Maps showed heavy traffic on empty streets, Yes you heard it right.
even turning the streets outside Google's Berlin office red.
Berlin-based artist Simon Weckert took a unique approach to exploring this idea.
By placing 99 smartphones running Google Maps into a cart and strolling through the streets of Berlin, he caused quite a stir.
As the cart moved slowly, Google Maps interpreted the data as a heavy traffic jam, turning green streets to red, indicating severe congestion.
Even the area around Google's Berlin office wasn't spared from this digital deception.
The advent of Googleโs Geo Tools began in 2005 with Maps and Earth, followed by Street View in 2007.
They have since become enormously more technologically advanced.
He further adds, "Googleโs map service has fundamentally changed our understanding of what a map is, how we interact with maps, their technological limitations, and how they look aesthetically."
Weckertโs clever trick reveals just how easily digital systems can be manipulated, leading both technology and its users to believe in a reality that isnโt there.
