This Thought Catalyst Post titled ‘The Unpretentious Leader’ is inspired by this paradigm shifting quote which epitomises the groundbreaking work of Dr. Brené Brown – scientist, author, researcher and storyteller extraordinaire!

In a world where the word ‘Leader’ is synonymous with perennial confidence and invulnerability - where to be a ‘real’ leader means never showing weakness; to always projecting an air of self assurance, an ‘I know it all and can do it all’ attitude – this premise is disruptive.

Questions I am often asked as an Executive Coach are - “Is it ok to show doubt in front of my team or boss? Will I look weak and incompetent or lose credibility if I ask for help?” “As the leader am I not the one who is always supposed to have all the answers and solutions?” “Shouldn’t I always be projecting confidence even when I don’t feel it?”

In this ‘macho – fake it till you make it world!’ world ‘The Unpretentious Leader’ shines like a beacon of courage – A leader who is unafraid to say, “I don’t know”, “I was wrong” “I’m sorry”.

The challenge for ‘Unpretentious Leaders’ in the making is finding that sweet spot that balances vulnerability with credibility.
Leaders who are able to strike that delicate balance will be the ones who will emerge as truly ‘unpretentious’ yet inspiring, motivating and authentic leaders.

THE RELUCTANT LEADER : This very first post of ‘The Thought Catalyst’ series is inspired by the words of Albus Dumbledore, one of my favourite characters from possibly the most beloved book series on the planet – J.K.Rowling’s Harry Potter Books. Here Dumbledore posits that individuals who rise to the occasion in times of desperate crisis and need, are the ones destined for true greatness.

It is these so called ‘Reluctant’ leaders that embody the hallmarks of great leadership – qualities of humility, integrity, universal ethics, compassion, proactive action, collaboration and courage ! Such leaders are also often oblivious to the siren call of the ‘vices’ that often (though not always) accompany individuals who aggressively and strategically strive for power and positions of leadership.

Driven by a higher and noble purpose, ‘Reluctant’ Leaders are more often than not insulated from the toxic extremes of excessive ambition – greed, need to control and the lust for power. They step up to the plate (albeit reluctantly) when they see that they are urgently needed to win the day, to rally the troops and if required sacrifice their personal interests. And in their quest to serve the greater good, they often discover that they have within a natural and surprising affinity for leadership.

Rarely, if ever, driven by self interest, or goals of personal glory and ascendancy, Reluctant Leaders end up serendipitously emerging as the greatest leaders of all !

THE THOUGHT CATALYST SERIES - Through the ages the world has been witness to great human beings - individuals who epitomised qualities of courage, compassion, humility, integrity and altruism – powerful personalities and thought leaders. These individuals often gifted humanity a legacy of wisdom in the form of inspiring and thought-provoking words - words, that over time, have become ‘quote worthy’. ‘The Thought Catalyst’ is a series of reflective short essays that seek to distil the universal and eternal wisdom of these great words and correlate them to the real world context. Through this series we hope to deconstruct the subtle nuances of what makes for a truly inspiring, impactful and influential Individual – what does it take to be not just successful and powerful, but to be remembered for posterity as force for good! Watch this space as we embark on this journey!

This quote by Alvin Toffler is one of my all time favourites related to Learning and Development. So much of personal growth and learning new skills or habits is linked to not just acquiring more knowledge but to breaking old habits and letting go of long held values, theories, information or belief systems. These old and entrenched mindsets may no longer be serving us well or may be not only redundant but may be preventing us from growing and learning.

“The illiterate of the 21st Century will not be those

who cannot read and write, but those who cannot

Learn, Unlearn and Relearn.”

ALVIN TOFFLER
