The Definition of Luxury keeps changing.

In the 60s a Car was a luxury.
In the 70s a Television was a luxury.
In the 80s a Telephone was a luxury.
In the 90s a Computer was a luxury...

Luxury is no more going on a cruise and eating food prepared by a renowned chef.
Luxury is eating fresh organic food grown in your own backyard.

Luxury is not having an elevator in your house.
Luxury is the ability to climb 3-4 storeys of stairs without difficulty.

Luxury is not the ability to afford a huge refrigerator.
Luxury is the ability to eat freshly cooked food 2-3 times a day.

Luxury is not having a home theatre system and watching the Himalayan expedition.
Luxury is physically experiencing the Himalayan expedition.

The RICH are becoming RICHER. The earnings of the top 1% earners has increased from around 10% in 1980 to more than 20% of the total income in the US today. The situation is similar in India.

Q: Why is it that the rich keep becoming richer while the middle class keeps struggling to make ends meet?
A: The rich do not do different things. They just do things DIFFERENTLY

I am enumerating some of the major differences below:
1. Almost every middle class working professional buys an endowment insurance policy in the very first year of their career. They get caught up in the magic words like “Guaranteed returns”, “Life Cover” and “Tax Savings”. At the end of the term (say 20 years), they would have got “Guaranteed returns”; but the returns would not beat inflation. The “Life Cover” would have proved in adequate in case the working professional dies at an early stage in life. “Tax Savings” can be achieved more efficiently. 2. Learn how to acquire assets WITHOUT taking loans. It is very easy to take a loan to acquire an asset. The middle class people keep doing it. To repay the loan, they would be required to pay EMI (Equated Monthly Instalment) for periods ranging from 3 years (for a Bike Loan), 5 – 7 years (for a Car Loan) and for 15 – 30 years for a Home Loan). The EMI has two components – the principal repayment and the Interest. The Interest rate would be slightly greater than the rate of Inflation in any Country of the world. The price of the NEW asset (Bike / Car / Home) may increase in line with the rate of Inflation in that Country. It may actually decrease in electronic goods like Mobile Phones, Laptops, iPads, iPods, etc.; so waiting for a few years to acquire the asset will actually benefit you AFTER you learn how to acquire the assets WITHOUT taking loans. If you take a loan to buy the car, you may have to keep taking new loans every 5-7 years to replace your car. Once you learn how to buy the car with your own money without taking a loan, you will also learn how to keep buying a new car every 5-7 year without taking any loan. The rich rarely take loans to acquire personal assets. If at all they take a loan, they invest equivalent amount in schemes that are likely to generate a return that would be significantly greater than the interest they pay. So in effect, they are earning money from these loans where-as the same loan would be a liability and a burden to the middle class.
3. Most middle class people who keep struggling to make ends meet invest in a very conservative manner where the returns after tax may not beat inflation. They MUST learn how to invest in more aggressive schemes where the returns would be significantly greater. It is a well-known fact that the higher the return, the greater the risk. Instead of shying away from risk, they must welcome risk as it gives them an opportunity to earn greater returns. However, they must LEARN how to manage risk. Only then they will be able to sleep peacefully and create enormous amount of wealth.

The RICH keep becoming RICHER because they understand how to manage risk and earn significantly greater returns on their investments. They start investing when the prices are low and nobody else is interested in investing. After the prices have moved up substantially, they SHARE this information with their friends in the upper middle class. The upper middle class will start investing and after they earn good returns, they SHARE this information with their friends in the middle class. The middle class will start investing and after they earn good returns, they SHARE this information with their friends in the lower middle class. By the time the lower middle class starts investing, it is already too late and the markets will start declining. The rich will exit immediately (if they have still not so) followed by the upper middle class > middle class > lower middle class. Those who exit early while the markets are still high will earn fantastic returns and those who enter late and exit late may actually incur loss.

There are two ways of learning anything:
1. Learn by making mistakes. This may sound like a better way but you will end up losing too much time and money in the process. You will remain where you are or may even migrate to a lower level.
2. Learn from other peoples mistakes. This will save you a lot of valuable time and money. Your migration to the upper levels will be faster.
