It marks the victory of good over evil — in many parts of India it celebrates Goddess 's triumph over the demon Mahishasura, and in others it commemorates Lord Rama’s defeat of Ravana. People perform special puja (worship), recite scriptures, offer prasad, light lamps, hold processions.
Why it is performed:
- To honor the divine force that protects dharma and restores moral order.
- To seek blessings for courage, protection, prosperity and the removal of inner and outer obstacles.
