Inspired by Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf's books, Rita Levi-Montalcini first considered a career as a writer, but ultimately decided to study medicine at the university in Turin. The long road to the Nobel Prize included having to build a laboratory in her bedroom during World War II.

Levi-Montalcini received the medicine prize in 1986 for her groundbreaking investigations into how the nervous system develops. Her research deepened our understanding of medical problems like senile dementia, deformities, and tumour diseases.
