The Romans used rue as a flavouring agent, but it has fallen out of general use in Europe. In Ethiopia it is still used for flavouring coffee, with a sprig of the herb being stirred in the coffee cup. Ethiopia is, of course, the original home of coffee, where it grows wild in the cloud forests of the southern highlands, from where it spread to the Yemen, then Constantinople, Venice and thence elsewhere in the Ottoman Empire, Europe and the world. I hope our proposal for a nomination of “Ethiopia’s Coffee Heritage” to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural landscape can be progressed

The article suggests that ivory rings supporting fabric bags worn by English women in England in the 5th and 6th centuries AD were imported from the kingdom of Axum (modern Ethiopia) - very interesting!

Bags prized as status symbols in Anglo-Saxon England were made using ivory imported from East Africa, according to a study that highlights the extent of post-Roman trade routes.

Dr Hasan Nadeem, Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities of Iraq, speaking at today’s 2nd Donors’ Conference of ALIPH (International Conference for the protection of heritage in conflict areas), held in Paris at the Louvre, at which our project for the emergency stabilization of the Taq Kisra (Sassanian Palace at Ctesiphon). The emergency stabilization project was presented, seen in the photograph behind the Minister. The project was funded by ALIPH and implemented on behalf of the Iraq Heritage Stabilization Programme of the University of Pennsylvania.

The emergency stabilisation of the great iwan vault of the Sassanian palace of Ctesiphon (Iraq), built 1,480 years ago and the largest brick arch ever constructed, is on the point of completion. This great building is almost exactly contemporary with Haghia Sophia in Istanbul. The project is funded by a grant from the ALIPH Foundation to the University of Pennsylvania. Now we have access to the top of the vault, we have started preparing the draft conservation plan.
