Conservative from the outside, unabashed personality from the inside.

A 120-year old timber house in the heart of downtown reykjavik, with several extensions spanning decades, was brought to our studio to be renovated and retrofit to meet the needs of a young family with two children and a furry friend. SEI's approach was to read the house holistically, respecting the integrity of the structure, time and material, while injecting it with intentional additions & removals, married with candy-pop bursts of colour throughout. This is a true testament to the studio's belief that good design is timeless, unique & feels like it's always been there.

Working closely with the clients, with craftsmen, conservation & planning agencies, we were able to go from design to approvals to construction and move-in dates, all within a span of two-years (complete gut, addition of a new floor/roof)!

The viewing platform at Reynisfjall, nicknamed the ''puffin platfom'' (we don't hate it), will be a safe, accessible way to take in the views across the endless horizon, Reynisdrangar and the picturesque town of Vík.
At an elevation of a 100m, this platform is a gentle intervention that takes into account the unique geology and context. With an in-situ concrete ramp, that wraps around a straight flight of blue stairs leading to the platform, the platform will be a valuable addition to the one of the most visited ( #2) tourist destinations in Iceland.

A beautiful new viewing platform is to be built on the slopes of Reynisfjall. Visitors will be able to enjoy stunning views - and watch puffins as they nest.

We are thrilled to announce that Sei Studio and Landmótun along with engineering support from Ríkharður Kristjansson, lighting design by Liska ehf., visualisations by Taller Origen, have been chosen as the winners in the recently held competition to develop and design the waterfront at Langisandur, Akranes.

This is one of few occasions where the community weighed in on the proposals and their feedback factored into the jury's consideration. We are deeply honoured that Skagamenn and the jury chose our proposal for 'Langisandur fyrir Alla', an inclusive, vibrant and distinctive public space that can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of age, abilities, interests and neurodiversity. We look forward to bringing this vision to life.

Kindergarten in Garðabær, Iceland.
A challenging topography and local planning conditions was navigated by using the terrain to create a two floor building; the children given autonomy over the upper floors, in close connection to various outdoor spaces designed according to age and the staff and administration at the lower levels, with visual and physical access to the landscaped area. This creates an overall safe space where children have independence and freedom of expression.
The parasol roof with vaulted skylights are oriented in different directions drawing in light all year around, changing characteristic throughout the day. The live roof echoes traditional cladding in Iceland while being contemporary.

Sei Studio was awarded the third place in a recent open competition for a kindergarten in Gardabær, Iceland. Immensely proud of the work we did in collaboration with Landmótun and Ríkharður Kristjánsson with input from Myrra. Thank you and congratulations to the other winners and participants.
