It has been raining in Montalcino for several days now, which has unfortunately delayed our pruning process. The rain is continuing today, and the forecast indicates it will persist through tomorrow and into next week.

On a brighter note, the first signs of spring have arrived. The newly bloomed crocuses and daffodils growing in the olive grove near Le Due Porte are gorgeous.

Autumn vibes Montalcino.

The countryside is abundant with rich colours and the lower angle of the sun creates lovely long shadows. While the sun still offers warmth during the day, temperatures drop quickly as dusk arrives.

Near the office, the magnolia tree is in full bloom, filling the air with an incredible scent of honey and candy—which the bees and bumblebees are certainly enjoying!

In the vineyards, the vines have been fertilized and the soil tilled, completing this year’s necessary work. In the olive groves, olives have been harvested, officially bringing our agricultural year to a close.

It’s here! We thrilled to announce the release of our single vineyard 2020 Le Due Porte Brunello di Montalcino. This vintage is exceptionally limited, with only 1,173 750ml, 50 magnums, and 15 3-liter bottles produced. Once again, this cru wine reflects the unique high altitude and terroir of the Collina of Le Due Porte.

Aromas of dark exotic spice, juniper, citrus and balsamic notes of Mediterranean scrub lead the way on the stunning 2020 Le Due Porte. Made with grapes hailing from the single vineyard of the same name situated 540m above sea level, it’s all about finesse and depth, with silky tannins that wrap around red cherry, wild strawberry, rosemary and star anise. Our vegetable garden, or ‘Orto’, is located above Vigne Basse and below our Cantina, nestled among our olive and fig trees. We’ve been very busy this spring planting tomatoes, zucchini, eggplants, and cucumbers there, and now at the end of the summer we can still enjoy its beautiful fruits.
There’s a humorous Italian saying, “l’orto vuole l’uomo morto”, which literally translates to “the vegetable garden wants the man dead”. It’s a colorful way of expressing just how much effort and commitment a garden requires!

Veraison has officially started here at our lower-altitude vineyards. For those unfamiliar, ‘veraison’ is translated as ‘invaiatura’ or ‘agostamento’ in Italian, because this phenomenon used to take place in August.
On July 7th we had a short hail storm in this vineyard. Fortunately, the grapes were not damaged, with only a few small, sporadic berries affected. You can see a dry berry in the center of this bunch, which was the only one impacted by the hail. As every year, to ensure the quality of our wine, careful selection during the harvest, using a sorting table, will be fundamental.

The 2020 Brunello from Il Palazzone is a fantastic expression of the vintage, starting with its beguiling aromas of forest floor, dog rose, wild berry, graphite and a balsamic whiff of eucalyptus. On the palate, agile, fine-grained tannins accompany Morello cherry, cranberry, licorice and bitter orange while fresh acidity keeps it lifted. Drink 2027–2032.
