MISSIONE ARCHEOLOGICA ITALIANA AD AL-KHIDAY / ITALIAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL MISSION IN AL-KHIDAY

🇮🇹Una delle principali difficoltà nella diffusione dei risultati degli scavi di al-Khiday tra gli studenti e, talvolta, anche tra i colleghi sudanesi è rappresentata dal fatto che i nostri lavori sono pubblicati esclusivamente in lingua inglese, oggi riconosciuta quasi universalmente come la lingua della comunicazione scientifica.
Per cercare di superare, almeno in parte, questo ostacolo, il Centro Studi Sudanesi e Sub-Sahariani ha affidato a Mongeda Khalid Ali Magzoub la traduzione in arabo di un nostro articolo pubblicato nel 2019 sulla rivista Azania (54(4): 445–467), intitolato The Mesolithic Period in the White Nile Region and the al-Khiday Sites. 🇬🇧 One of the main challenges in disseminating the results of the excavations at al-Khiday among Sudanese students and, at times, even among Sudanese colleagues is that our work has been published exclusively in English, a language now almost universally recognized as the primary medium of scientific communication.
To help overcome this barrier, at least in part, the Centro Studi Sudanesi e Sub-Sahariani commissioned Mongeda Khalid Ali Magzoub to translate into Arabic our 2019 article published in Azania (54(4): 445–467), entitled The Mesolithic Period in the White Nile Region and the al-Khiday Sites. The article provides a synthesis of the main results achieved through many years of research and fieldwork.

🇸🇩 تتمثل إحدى أبرز الصعوبات التي تواجه نشر نتائج حفريات موقع الخُضَيّ بين الطلاب السودانيين، وأحيانًا حتى بين الزملاء السودانيين، في أن جميع أعمالنا العلمية تُنشر باللغة الإنجليزية، التي تُعد اليوم، إلى حد كبير، اللغة الرئيسة للتواصل العلمي.

🇮🇹 Durante la campagna di scavo del 2017 ad al-Khiday abbiamo avuto nel nostro team due studentesse sudanesi: Safa Musa Eisa (Università di Khartoum) e Wafa Sharif Dawod Hussein (Università el Neelain). Entrambe si sono distinte per capacità, impegno e passione. Safa ha continuato a lavorare con noi anche nelle campagne del 2018 e del 2019.
Wafa, invece, ha intrapreso un percorso diverso, scegliendo di specializzarsi nello studio delle ceramiche preistoriche sotto la guida di un eccellente ceramologo della Section française de la Direction des Antiquités du Soudan, Romain David. Con grande determinazione e costanza ha proseguito i suoi studi perseguendo un obiettivo preciso: il conseguimento del Dottorato di ricerca.
Siamo quindi particolarmente felici di congratularci con lei per aver brillantemente discusso e concluso il suo dottorato sabato 30 maggio presso la Sorbona di Parigi. A Wafa vanno le nostre più sincere felicitazioni, con l'augurio di poter collaborare nuovamente in futuro, questa volta come colleghe.

🇬🇧 During the 2017 excavation season at al-Khiday, two Sudanese students joined our team: Safa Musa Eisa (University of Khartoum) and Wafa Sharif Dawod Hussein (University el-Neelain). Both stood out for their skills, dedication, and enthusiasm. Safa continued to work with us during the 2018 and 2019 field seasons.
Wafa, on the other hand, chose a different path, specializing in the study of prehistoric ceramics under the guidance of the outstanding ceramic specialist Romain David of the French Section of the Sudanese Antiquities Service. With great determination and perseverance, she pursued her studies with a clear goal in mind: earning a PhD.
We are therefore especially delighted to congratulate her on the successful completion and defense of her doctoral dissertation on Saturday, 30 May, at the Sorbonne University in Paris. We extend our warmest congratulations to Wafa and hope that we will have the opportunity to work together again in the future, this time as colleagues.

خلال حملة التنقيب في الخدي عام ٢٠١٧، انضمت إلينا طالبتان سودانيتان: صفاء موسى عيسى (جامعة الخرطوم) ووفاء شريف داود حسين (جامعة النيلين). وقد تميزتا بقدراتهما والتزامهما وشغفهما. واصلت صفاء العمل معنا خلال حملتي ٢٠١٨ و٢٠١٩. أما وفاء، فقد اختارت مسارًا مختلفًا، حيث تخصصت في دراسة الخزف ما قبل التاريخ تحت إشراف خزّاف بارع من القسم الفرنسي في مديرية الآثار السودانية، رومان دافيد. وبإصرار وعزيمة كبيرين، واصلت دراستها، ساعيةً إلى هدف محدد: الحصول على درجة الدكتوراه.

لذا، يسعدنا جدًا أن نهنئها على اجتيازها بنجاح باهر لرسالة الدكتوراه يوم السبت ٣٠ مايو في جامعة السوربون بباريس. خالص تهانينا لوفاء، ونتطلع إلى التعاون معها مجددًا في المستقبل، هذه المرة كزميلتين.

🇮🇹 Per quanto ne sappiamo, l’Africa è stata la culla dell’umanità: è in questa terra che l’uomo ha mosso i suoi primi passi e da qui è partito, più volte, per esplorare altri territori. Migrare sembra essere quasi parte del DNA dell’essere umano. Che cosa ha spinto l’uomo a migrare nel lontano passato e che cosa lo spinge oggi a farlo? Proveremo a discutere di questo complesso argomento sabato pomeriggio a Silea.

🇬🇧 As far as we know, Africa was the cradle of humanity: it is on this land that humans took their first steps, and from here they set out, many times, to explore other territories. Migration seems almost to be part of human DNA. What drove humans to migrate in the distant past, and what drives them to do so today? We will try to discuss this complex topic on Saturday afternoon in Silea.

🇸🇩 بقدر ما نعلم، كانت أفريقيا مهد البشرية؛ ففي هذه الأرض خطا الإنسان خطواته الأولى، ومنها انطلق مرات عديدة لاستكشاف أراضٍ أخرى. يبدو أن الهجرة تكاد تكون جزءًا من الحمض النووي للإنسان. ما الذي دفع الإنسان إلى الهجرة في الماضي البعيد، وما الذي يدفعه إلى القيام بذلك اليوم؟ سنحاول مناقشة هذا الموضوع المعقّد بعد ظهر يوم السبت في سيليا.

🇮🇹 Fatto! Quattro giorni di seminario con un gruppo di colleghi sudanesi ed egiziani: abbiamo parlato di litica, ceramica e di molti altri temi, seguendo anche le curiosità del momento. Ne è nato un dialogo proficuo, per loro e per me. Lo scambio con Maria Carmela Gatto, collega e amica di lunga data, ha contribuito a rendere l’evento ancora più dinamico e stimolante.
Un sentito ringraziamento all’Istituto Italiano del Cairo per l’ospitalità e al Professor Cecere per aver creduto in questa iniziativa.

🇬🇧 Done! Four days of seminar with a group of Sudanese and Egyptian colleagues: we discussed lithics, ceramics, and many other topics, also following the questions and interests that emerged along the way. It led to a fruitful dialogue, for them and for me. The exchange with Maria Carmela Gatto, a long-time colleague and friend, helped make the event even more dynamic and stimulating.
Sincere thanks to the Italian Institute in Cairo for their hospitality and to Professor Cecere for believing in this initiative.

🇮🇹 Mentre continuiamo a portare avanti i nostri studi sui materiali di al-Khiday e a progettarne di nuovi, aggiungendo così ulteriori tasselli alla ricostruzione della storia dei gruppi umani che hanno abitato l’area tra la fine del Pleistocene recente e l’Olocene medio, cerchiamo di mantenere vivo il nostro legame con i colleghi sudanesi, e non solo, attraverso un seminario che auspichiamo vedrà una partecipazione numerosa.

🇬🇧 While we continue to pursue our research on the materials from al-Khiday and to design new projects, thereby adding further pieces to the reconstruction of the history of the human groups that inhabited the area between the end of the Late Pleistocene and the Middle Holocene, we seek to keep our ties with Sudanese colleagues, and beyond, alive through a seminar that we hope will attract broad participation.

🇸🇩 بينما نواصل أبحاثنا حول المواد من الخدي وتصميم مشاريع جديدة، وبالتالي إضافة المزيد من القطع إلى إعادة بناء تاريخ الجماعات البشرية التي سكنت المنطقة بين نهاية العصر البليستوسيني المتأخر والعصر الهولوسيني الأوسط، فإننا نسعى إلى الحفاظ على علاقاتنا مع الزملاء السودانيين، وخارجها، من خلال ندوة نأمل أن تجذب مشاركة واسعة.

MISSIONE ARCHEOLOGICA ITALIANA AD AL-KHIDAY / ITALIAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL MISSION IN AL-KHIDAY

🇮🇹 Lo scavo della necropoli neolitica di R12, in Nubia, ha rappresentato un notevole investimento di energie, ma anche un ritorno altrettanto significativo in termini di conoscenze sulle società preistoriche della regione.
L’idea del progetto era nata da Sandro e dal suo interesse per le società neolitiche e i costumi funerari, maturato dopo lo scavo del cimitero omanita di Ras al-Hamra.
Oggi, a cinque anni dalla sua scomparsa, vogliamo onorarlo con queste foto che lo ritraggono durante lo scavo della prima sepoltura individuata a R12: un individuo accompagnato da un bucranio, un vaso e alcuni ciottolini bianchi.

🇬🇧 The excavation of the Neolithic necropolis of R12, in Nubia, represented a considerable investment of energy, but it also yielded equally significant insights into the prehistoric societies of the region.
The idea for the project originated with Sandro and his interest in Neolithic societies and funerary customs, developed after his excavation of the Omani cemetery of Ras al-Hamra.
Today, five years after his passing, we wish to honor him with these photos portraying him during the excavation of the first burial discovered at R12: an individual accompanied by a bucranium, a vessel, and a few white pebbles.

🇸🇩 مثّل التنقيب في مقبرة العصر الحجري الحديث R12 في النوبة استثمارًا كبيرًا في الجهد المبذول، ولكنه أيضًا مثّل عائدًا لا يقل أهمية من حيث المعرفة بمجتمعات ما قبل التاريخ في المنطقة.
انبثقت فكرة المشروع من ساندرو واهتمامه بمجتمعات العصر الحجري الحديث وعادات الدفن، والتي تطورت بعد تنقيبه في مقبرة رأس الحمراء العمانية.
اليوم، وبعد خمس سنوات من وفاته، نودّ تكريمه بهذه الصور له أثناء التنقيب في أول مدفن اكتُشف في R12: شخص برفقة جمجمة، ومزهرية، وبعض الحصى البيضاء.

🇮🇹 La guerra ci impedisce di lavorare sul campo, di ritrovare quella magica atmosfera dell’alba sul Nilo e l’incontro con i nostri ragazzi. Ma non ci perdiamo d’animo e continuiamo a studiare i materiali restituiti da al-Khiday.
Qui trovate un lavoro appena pubblicato, dedicato a un oggetto davvero particolare. Non è stata una ricerca facile, ma grazie anche ai commenti, davvero preziosi, di alcuni revisori, pensiamo di aver prodotto un lavoro più che discreto. La parte più difficile? Parlare di “simbolismo” partendo da basi piuttosto esili.

🇬🇧 The war prevents us from working in the field, from experiencing again that magical atmosphere of dawn on the Nile and meeting with our team. But we’re not losing heart, we continue studying the materials recovered from al-Khiday.
Here you’ll find a newly published paper focused on a particularly unusual object. It wasn’t an easy piece of research, but thanks also to the truly valuable feedback from some of the reviewers, we believe we’ve produced a solid piece of work. The hardest part? Talking about “symbolism” on rather shaky grounds.

🇸🇩 تمنعنا الحرب من العمل في الميدان، ومن استعادة تلك الأجواء السحرية لفجر النيل ولقاء فريقنا. لكننا لا نفقد الأمل، ونواصل دراسة المواد التي استُعيدت من الموقع الأثري في الخُدَي.
فيما يلي تجدون بحثًا نُشر مؤخرًا يتناول قطعة أثرية غير اعتيادية. لم تكن مهمة سهلة، لكن وبفضل الملاحظات القيّمة حقًا من بعض المراجعين، نعتقد أننا قدّمنا عملًا جيدًا.
أصعب جزء؟ الحديث عن "الرمزية" استنادًا إلى معطيات ضعيفة جدًا.

MISSIONE ARCHEOLOGICA ITALIANA AD AL-KHIDAY / ITALIAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL MISSION IN AL-KHIDAY

🇮🇹 Per comprendere a fondo la vita e le abitudini della popolazione di al-Khiday a partire dal materiale scheletrico, oggi disponiamo di strumenti dalle potenzialità straordinarie. In questa prospettiva si colloca il progetto sullo studio dei denti, avviato con Alessia Nava (La Sapienza) e portato avanti con straordinaria dedizione da una giovane studiosa, Giusy Capasso (La Sapienza). I primi risultati del progetto sono stati presentati a Cagliari, in occasione del convegno AAI-UZI (16–19 settembre), con il lavoro “Enamel histomorphometry of pre-Mesolithic and Neolithic individuals from Al-Khiday”.

🇬🇧 To gain a deeper understanding of the life and habits of the al-Khiday population from skeletal material, we now have access to tools with extraordinary potential. Within this framework lies the project on the study of teeth, initiated with Alessia Nava (La Sapienza) and carried forward with remarkable dedication by a young scholar, Giusy Capasso (La Sapienza). The first results of the project were presented in Cagliari, at the AAI-UZI conference (September 16–19), with the paper “Enamel histomorphometry of pre-Mesolithic and Neolithic individuals from Al-Khiday”.

🇸🇩 لفهم حياة وعادات سكان الخيدي فهمًا كاملًا باستخدام المواد الهيكلية، نمتلك الآن أدوات ذات إمكانات استثنائية. هذا هو سياق مشروع دراسة طب الأسنان، الذي بدأته أليسيا نافا (جامعة لا سابينزا) واستمرت فيه بتفانٍ استثنائي الباحثة الشابة جيوسي كاباسو (جامعة لا سابينزا). عُرضت النتائج الأولية للمشروع في كالياري خلال مؤتمر AAI-UZI (16-19 سبتمبر)، مع ورقة بحثية بعنوان "قياس نسيج مينا الأسنان لأفراد من العصر الحجري ما قبل المتوسط ​​والعصر الحجري الحديث من الخيدي".
