The extraordinary story of Żabiński Villa. They saved hundreds of Jews...

On September 21, 1965, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Zabinski and his wife, Antonina Zabinska, as Righteous Among the Nations. On October 30, 1968 Dr. Jan Zabinski planted a tree on the Mount of Remembrance.

"Dr. Zabinski, was a man with exceptional modesty and without any self-interest" - wrote Irena Meizel - "When the Warsaw ghetto was established Jan and his wife, Antonina, began helping their Jewish friends."

For the hideout the whole villa and sometimes even parts of Zoo was used but " they all live normally here, they had yet to eat, go to the toilet" .
Those who have a "stronger" papers, appeared in public areas, helping in everyday life. For example, Magdalena Gross, baked bread and cakes.

Some people stayed in the shelter under the house, which was built by owners at the beginning of the war. It was formed not in order to hide Jews or people associated with AK, but for the safety of family. Later, when Jews were told to report to authorities and ghettos were organized , it was used as a hideout for others.
Some "tenants" hovered around the house and only at night were coming down. They slept there, and in the morning they returned - says our interlocutor.

Owners lived with the stigma of fear, but never treated this activity as something unusual. Of course, in their memories they scrolled to note the risks and dangers which threatened them, but it was never overexposed. Never was a question of heroism...
