While we debate Patois versus English in Jamaica, this young footballer (heading to the ) can communicate in four languages, including English, despite never playing in an English-speaking country.
While we must celebrate and preserve who we are as Jamaicans, including our culture and language, we must also ensure that our children are equipped to compete in a global world.
Language is opportunity. Language is access. Language is connection.
The goal is not to choose between Patois and English, but to ensure our children can proudly embrace their Jamaican identity while developing the language skills needed to succeed, thrive and compete anywhere in the world. English is a global currency.
