When someone approaches a restricted area, “How may I assist you?” gives a professional security officer an opportunity to understand the situation, verify the person’s purpose, and follow the proper access procedure.

A purposeful security patrol should help an officer notice what has changed, check vulnerable areas, address or escalate concerns appropriately, and leave a clear factual record.

That means looking beyond the route itself:

• Is a door open that should be secured?
• Is an item unattended?
• Is a light no longer working?
• Is there unusual activity around an access point?
• Does the concern require immediate attention or escalation?

Our officers spent this week in a classroom before going back out on the sand.

SecureWorld Corporation opened the Beach Security Operations Excellence programme at Royalton Blue Waters, led by Capt. Everton Phillips, Senior Training Manager. Seven modules, closing with a twenty-question written assessment. The pass mark is seventy-five percent.

Here is one thing our officers are taught never to say.

"This is private property. You have to leave."

It invites an argument about the law, in public, in front of watching guests, and it is an argument a security officer cannot win. Officers are trained to name the hotel standard instead. This area is reserved for our registered guests. Here is where you may go.

Two statements, one option, then step back and call the supervisor. No shouting. No hands. No contest.

A guest on holiday remembers very little about the security on a property. He remembers whether somebody was already walking over.

For a guest, those words can carry worry, frustration, and fear. A professional security response should not begin with dismissal or with an accusation. It should begin with calm listening and accurate facts.

The officer’s first steps should be to:

✓ Take the concern seriously.
✓ Document what is missing and where and when it was last seen.
✓ Avoid disturbing the area or making assumptions.
✓ Notify the supervisor and follow the property’s reporting procedure.

A disciplined first response protects both the guest and the integrity of the follow-up.
