A hotel can separate its bottles. That’s a good start. But the glass still needs to be collected, moved and connected to a place that can recycle it.

Schools and communities help more people understand the work. Partners and donors help it reach further.

Jamaica has a lot of glass waste, and collecting bottles is only part of our solution.

The glass has to stay separate, be prepared properly, and have somewhere to go for recycling.
That’s the work happening behind the scenes.

From businesses in western Jamaica to a glass processor in Costa Rica, this is what it looks like when collected glass actually keeps moving through the recycling system.

Reuse, upcycle and recycle all help keep materials in use — but they don’t mean the same thing.

Reuse means using the same item again.
Upcycle means turning it into something different and useful.
Recycle means processing the material so it can be used again.

Knowing the difference makes it easier to decide what to do with glass before it becomes general garbage.

25,000 kg of glass. Every month. ♻️🇯🇲

That’s the average amount of glass we help divert from Jamaica’s waste stream through the businesses we work with.

And it adds up to roughly 300,000 kg a year.

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes to give Jamaica’s glass a better ending — and we want more people to know about it.

From empty glass bottle → candle. 🕯️♻️

And yes, we do the whole process.

Choosing the bottle, cutting the glass, sanding the edges, preparing the wax, melting, pouring and finally… a brand-new candle.

It’s one of the hands-on experiences we offer through our glass upcycling workshops — turning something that could have been thrown away into something useful (and pretty).
