ほんの20年ほど前は海外と取引するのは主に大企業と中小企業の中でも力のある中小企業でした。
しかし、状況は変わり、これからもどんどん変わっていきそうです。
現在では、インターネットの普及によるグローバル化、インバウンドの波等により、
数人の従業員や経営者1人でがんばっておられる小さな中小企業や個人事業でさえも、
海外とのやりとりが可能であり、その可能性はますます上がっています。
そこでまず問題になっているのが、言葉の壁ではないでしょうか。
海外とのやりとりには、まず英語が必要です。
今、英語は世界語とも言われ、英語圏の人々だけでなく、非英語圏の人々のほとんどが
英語を使ってビジネスをしています。
英語はますます重要になっています。
Only 20 years ago, only large or relatively-large mid-sized companies in Japan did business with foreign companies. Since then, however, the situations have significantly changed and will keep changing in the near future, too.
Nowadays, small companies run by only one owner or with only a few employees, and even individuals, can do business with foreign companies and such companies will likely increase from now on, due to globalization brought on by the internet and the inbound trend.
In other words, more and more Japanese are facing the language barrier now.
English is necessary for doing business with companies overseas, including even tiny companies in small countries which don’t speak English as their native language.
English is an international language and most people in the world including both English-speaking and non-English-speaking countries use English for international business.
As we already know, English is far more important these days than ever before.
英語は本当に国際語になっています。
英語圏だけでなく、世界中の人々が英語を話し、ビジネスをしています。
話す、聞く力ももちろん大事ですが、インターネットでつながっている現代社会では、
読む、書く力がこれまで以上に重要になっています。
読む、書くことは、話す、聞くことよりも、正確さ、わかりやすさが必要です。
なぜならば、そこには、顔の表情やジェスチャーもなく、
文字ですべてを伝えなくてはならないからです。

As you all may know, English is literally and effectively an international language. Almost all people around the world, including non-native English-speaking people, communicate in English and do business using English.
Although it goes without saying that speaking and listening are important for communication, reading and writing are far more important than ever before amid this Internet-connected world.
In reading and writing, accuracy and conciseness are much more important than speaking and listening.

By the way, I usually work from a co-working share office, OBP Academia, which is located in Osaka Business Park.
Aside from my normal translation job, I hold an English reading seminar once every month there, entitled, "Let's Read an English Article Together!"
The next seminar will be held from 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 13.
If you find reading English articles to be a bit difficult, this is the seminar for you. I will go over the meanings of each sentence and cover basic grammar as well.
