We thought we were simply restoring a beautiful feature of our Japanese house… but somehow, we ended up bringing a little more calm into our everyday life. 🌿

One of the features we’ve come to appreciate most: tatami floors.

Replacing the old tatami in our kids’ area was one of our first projects. At first, we simply wanted to restore something that made the house special.

But after a year of living with it, we’ve come to love it for so much more.

Tatami is more than just a beautiful Japanese feature.

Natural igusa has a soft, distinctive texture and a fresh, earthy scent. Tatami also helps regulate moisture and provides insulation, making it especially comfortable through Japan’s changing seasons.

But beyond the practical benefits, there’s something beautiful about living with natural materials.

They remind us that so much of what surrounds us is already a gift from the Creator.

The plants, the earth, the changing seasons, the materials we shape with our hands—there’s something grounding about bringing a little more of that creation into our everyday spaces.

Connected to nature. Grounded. A little slower. A little calmer.

And of course, none of this happens without the hands that make it.

We were incredibly fortunate to have our tatami made and installed by a local family whose craft has been passed down for more than 200 years, now in its seventh generation.

They are one of the few families still practicing this traditional craft in Japan today, and their work can also be found in temples around our area.

For ours, we chose natural igusa from Kumamoto, Japan.🇯🇵

Knowing that generations of knowledge and craftsmanship went into something made from materials found in God’s creation—and that we now get to live with it every day—makes it feel even more special.

And our kids absolutely love it.

They roll around, play, stretch, and sometimes just lie there.

And apparently, we adults have discovered the same joy. 😂

Maybe it’s the natural materials.
Maybe it’s the craftsmanship.
Maybe it’s the quiet connection to creation.

Or maybe tatami simply reminds us to stop and appreciate what we’ve been given.

Tatami isn’t just something you see. It’s something you feel.

Under your feet.
Through the changing seasons.
In the calm it brings to a room.
And in those little moments when you pause and feel grateful. 🌾

And yes, tatami is a choice. Not everyone loves it, and it does require regular care and cleaning.

But for us, that’s simply part of life.

The joy is in creating a space that feels peaceful, welcoming, and well cared for. 🌿

A Japanese tradition we thought we were simply restoring…

but ended up becoming one of the things we love most about our home.💕
