These spice mills feature a unique geometric form, blending squares and triangles with 3D curved surfaces.
The character-rich wood is sourced directly from apple farmers in Nagano, Japan—a region world-famous for its apples. By repurposing this wood, we breathe new life into it as a functional piece of art.
Our commitment to storytelling through materials goes further: we use local timber, offcuts from furniture workshops, and reclaimed pillars from traditional Japanese houses. Each mill carries its own history.
Unlike standard round mills turned on a lathe, these are meticulously hand-finished. After rough shaping with a trimmer, I use a Nankin-kanna (Japanese spokeshave) to hand-plane every single surface.
This form provides a superior grip compared to cylindrical mills, making it effortless to use even for those with smaller hands. The faceted surfaces—reminiscent of an ergonomic mouse—catch the light beautifully, while the subtle texture from the hand-planing enhances the fit and tactile experience.
We strive to create designs where sophisticated aesthetics meet functional purpose, all while honoring the soul of the material.
