Qantas plans to begin phasing out its 10 remaining Airbus A380 aircraft

SYDNEY — Qantas will accelerate the retirement of its iconic Airbus A380 fleet, bringing a premature end to the double-decker superjumbo’s service in Australia. Rather than seeking a direct size-for-size replacement for the 485-seat superjumbos, Qantas is restructuring its long-haul network around point-to-point efficiency and premium offerings across multiple aircraft types:

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners: Joining the fleet starting in late 2027, these aircraft will debut an updated, refreshed Business Class cabin product.
Airbus A321XLRs: Beginning in 2028, Qantas will deploy 16 of these extra-long-range narrowbodies in a premium-heavy configuration to unlock new long-haul routes.
Airbus A350-1000ULR: Dedicated to the flagship “Project Sunrise” ultra-long-range non-stop flights connecting Australia’s east coast directly to London and New York.
To support the transition, Qantas is evaluating the conversion of roughly 20 existing options with Airbus and Boeing into firm orders for additional A350 and 787 aircraft.

Commission will report back within 120 days on governance, curriculum, service obligations and a permanent location
President Donald Trump signed an order Friday creating a presidential commission to design a proposed U.S. Space Academy. The NASA-led federal academy would train students for careers across military, civil and commercial space programs.

Commission Gets 120 Days
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman will chair the commission, while NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson will serve as executive director. The group has 120 days to recommend a governance structure, academic curriculum, applicant requirements, possible service obligations for graduates and any legislation needed to establish the space academy. The White House order also calls for an implementation plan and coordination with existing federal education programs.

“Given the rapid growth of the U.S. Space Force and commercial space industry, and the expansion of our ambitions to the Moon and far beyond the Moon, it’s clear we will need to educate and train an entire generation of skilled service members, engineers, and civil operators,” Trump said during the signing.

Location Remains Undecided
The Space Academy signing took place at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where Trump also presented the Artemis II crew with the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.

Although NASA’s announcement described the academy as being established at Johnson, the order itself does not designate a permanent campus. Instead, the commission must recommend a process for selecting the academy’s physical location. Implementation could also require congressional action and would depend on available funding.

The space academy proposal follows several other administration space-policy actions. Trump signed the “Ensuring American Space Superiority” order in December 2025, followed by a new national space transportation policy on Aug. 20. The commission’s report will determine more of the proposed academy’s structure and what steps would be required before it could begin operating.

Two years after Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 was struck by severe turbulence over Myanmar, the widow of the only passenger who died in the incident has filed a lawsuit against Singapore Airlines in the UK High Court.

Linda Kitchen, 74, was travelling with her husband Geoff Kitchen, 73, when their Boeing 777-300ER encountered powerful convective turbulence during the flight from London to Singapore on May 21, 2024.

The aircraft was diverted to Bangkok after the violent turbulence caused chaos inside the cabin.

According to official investigation findings, the aircraft experienced an extremely rapid change in vertical acceleration. The aircraft went from approximately +1.35G to -1.5G in just 0.6 seconds, before experiencing another sharp increase to around +1.5G.

The cabin also experienced a dramatic vertical movement. Investigators estimated that the aircraft effectively dropped about 178 feet in 4.6 seconds.

The result was devastating.

Passengers who were not wearing seatbelts were thrown violently upward, with some striking the ceiling before falling back onto the cabin floor. Oxygen mask compartments were torn open, ceiling panels were damaged, luggage and equipment were displaced, and parts of the galley were badly damaged.

Geoff Kitchen died after suffering a fatal medical event involving heart failure and pulmonary oedema.

Linda suffered serious spinal injuries and spent approximately 10 days receiving treatment in a Bangkok hospital before being flown back to the UK. She reportedly learned that her husband had died two days later.

Linda has now brought legal action, with claims relating both to her own spinal injuries and specialist care, and to Geoff's estate. Several other UK passengers affected by the incident have also reportedly pursued legal action.

Singapore Airlines has said it cannot comment on individual matters while they are before the courts.

The SQ321 investigation also highlighted an important detail: the most severe vertical acceleration occurred approximately 17 seconds after the seatbelt sign had been switched on. Meal service was underway at the time, meaning a significant number of passengers and crew were out of their seats.

The incident became a stark reminder of something aviation professionals have emphasized for decades:

✈️ Seatbelts are not just for takeoff and landing.

Even when an aircraft appears to be flying smoothly, severe turbulence can develop with little warning. Modern weather radar and forecasting systems can help crews avoid dangerous areas, but they cannot eliminate every turbulence hazard.

The SQ321 tragedy showed just how quickly conditions can change at cruising altitude.

For passengers, one simple action can make a potentially life-changing difference: keep your seatbelt fastened whenever you are seated, even when the seatbelt sign is off.

In the video, a cabin crew member repeatedly pulls and stretches the handset’s coiled cable. It might look insignificant, but aircraft communication equipment is built and maintained to specific standards, and unnecessary stress on a cable can eventually lead to damage.

According to the claim accompanying the video, an OEM replacement cord can cost around $400 before labor. The final maintenance cost can be higher once inspection, troubleshooting and installation are included.

And this is exactly why aircraft maintenance can be so expensive.

A Ryanair passenger has publicly challenged the airline over what they describe as an unfair and confusing baggage charge, claiming they were forced to pay €90 to check a suitcase for “safety reasons” because it was allegedly too large for the cabin.

But according to the passenger, there was a major problem with that explanation.

After paying the €90 checked-baggage fee, the same suitcase was reportedly placed in the aircraft cabin and fitted perfectly.

The passenger says they had already paid €50 to bring the suitcase in the cabin, meaning the total cost associated with the bag reached €140.

What has made the passenger even more frustrated is that this was reportedly the exact same suitcase used on the outbound journey with Ryanair, where there were no issues at all.

The passenger is now asking Ryanair to explain why the bag was considered unacceptable for cabin carriage on one part of the journey, yet apparently fit inside the cabin after the additional €90 payment.

The complaint raises a broader question for passengers:

👉 Was the additional charge genuinely required for safety and cabin-baggage restrictions, or was the situation handled inconsistently?

The passenger has called on Ryanair to refund the €90 and resolve the matter amicably.

At this stage, these are the passenger’s claims, and Ryanair’s response would be important to establish exactly what happened and why the baggage decision was made.
