Two years after Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 was struck by severe turbulence over Myanmar, the widow of the only passenger who died in the incident has filed a lawsuit against Singapore Airlines in the UK High Court.
Linda Kitchen, 74, was travelling with her husband Geoff Kitchen, 73, when their Boeing 777-300ER encountered powerful convective turbulence during the flight from London to Singapore on May 21, 2024.
The aircraft was diverted to Bangkok after the violent turbulence caused chaos inside the cabin.
According to official investigation findings, the aircraft experienced an extremely rapid change in vertical acceleration. The aircraft went from approximately +1.35G to -1.5G in just 0.6 seconds, before experiencing another sharp increase to around +1.5G.
The cabin also experienced a dramatic vertical movement. Investigators estimated that the aircraft effectively dropped about 178 feet in 4.6 seconds.
The result was devastating.
Passengers who were not wearing seatbelts were thrown violently upward, with some striking the ceiling before falling back onto the cabin floor. Oxygen mask compartments were torn open, ceiling panels were damaged, luggage and equipment were displaced, and parts of the galley were badly damaged.
Geoff Kitchen died after suffering a fatal medical event involving heart failure and pulmonary oedema.
Linda suffered serious spinal injuries and spent approximately 10 days receiving treatment in a Bangkok hospital before being flown back to the UK. She reportedly learned that her husband had died two days later.
Linda has now brought legal action, with claims relating both to her own spinal injuries and specialist care, and to Geoff's estate. Several other UK passengers affected by the incident have also reportedly pursued legal action.
Singapore Airlines has said it cannot comment on individual matters while they are before the courts.
The SQ321 investigation also highlighted an important detail: the most severe vertical acceleration occurred approximately 17 seconds after the seatbelt sign had been switched on. Meal service was underway at the time, meaning a significant number of passengers and crew were out of their seats.
The incident became a stark reminder of something aviation professionals have emphasized for decades:

Even when an aircraft appears to be flying smoothly, severe turbulence can develop with little warning. Modern weather radar and forecasting systems can help crews avoid dangerous areas, but they cannot eliminate every turbulence hazard.
The SQ321 tragedy showed just how quickly conditions can change at cruising altitude.
For passengers, one simple action can make a potentially life-changing difference: keep your seatbelt fastened whenever you are seated, even when the seatbelt sign is off.
The legal case may now provide further answers for the families and passengers still dealing with the consequences of that flight.
