Connecting with the next wave of Startup Founders in Japan 🤝

The 2026 edition of SusHi Tech Tokyo brought together 770 startups from 60 countries, all coming to pitch, build partnerships, and plant flags in the Japanese market.

Japan People Team was there, connecting with VCs and cross-border consultants backing the next wave of Japan-focused ventures.

All the conversations we had confirmed that people strategy is a real priority from the early stages. Yet building a team in Japan as a foreign founder still involves cultural, legal, and organizational hurdles, often without a dedicated HR function 🧩

Insights like these keep us close to what startup founders are actually dealing with, and make us better at supporting them as they build their teams in Japan.

✨A New Partner for Japan People Team ✨

Last week, we had the pleasure of meeting Julie, who is joining forces with Japan People Team and Talentus to support our SEO and digital marketing efforts.

Beyond a great dinner, we aligned on our vision and mapped out the next steps to strengthen our online presence across both English and Japanese-speaking markets.

The work we do is deeply human, helping international companies in Japan build best-in-class HR functions and find the right talent in a complex local landscape.

That story deserves to be told well, so we can reach and connect more authentically with the organizations we can truly support.

🌟 Supporting entrepreneurs blazing new paths in Japan’s deep tech

We were honored to deliver an HR session in partnership with Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Foundation as part of their Venture Development Accelerator Program.

Paul Hintgen covered key HR topics for startup founders, including:

- Co-founder selection
- Key aspects of Japan labor law
- Equity splits and ESOP programs
- Recruitment best practices for early-stage startups

It was an honor to support such sharp entrepreneurs as they blaze their way forward in building deep-tech startups in Japan and shaping the country’s future economic growth.

"Wellness and HR Priorities in Japan – A Step Forward"

The japan people team, including Chikara, Paul & Keiko, had the privilege of attending YuLife's HR Roundtable this week, focused on the critical topic of wellness in the workplace.

The roundtable brought together some truly impressive HR professionals and executives to exchange ideas on how organizations can better overcome the common challenges of low-employee engagement, mental health related burnout, improving the people management capabilities of managers and other challenges commonly experienced by executives and HR leaders in Japan.

It was not only informative but also inspiring to see how committed other professionals are in making efforts to drive transformation in these areas.

While there’s still a lot of hard work to be done to make improvements that can overcome these challenges, the event left the attendees optimistic that we’re moving in the right direction with so many other inspiring leaders taking positive action.

A big thank you to YuLife for hosting this incredible session and to all the attendees for their thought-provoking discussions.
