Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today's earthquake in Kumamoto.

With aftershocks still possible, this is a good moment to review a few basics on how to stay safe.

If you are indoors when shaking starts:
- Protect your head and take cover under a sturdy table.
- Stay away from windows, shelves, and anything that could fall.
- Do not rush outside during the shaking.
- Once it stops, secure an exit by opening a door, and check your surroundings before moving.

For real-time local information such as evacuation sites and safety updates, please refer to the Kumamoto Prefecture Disaster Prevention Portal: https://portal.bousai.pref.kumamoto.jp/

Big Changes in Japan’s Foreign Driver’s License Conversion Process

Many expats are still unaware of the major update introduced to Japan’s foreign driver’s license conversion written test.

Since October 2025, the test has shifted to 50 true/false questions, and passing now requires 45 correct answers—a significant increase in difficulty for first‑time applicants.

To support expats and HR teams navigating this change, we have just released a new page with sample questions and explanations—making it easier to prepare with accurate, up‑to‑date information.

Here’s one example from the updated test:

“On national expressways, assuming a dry road surface and new tires, the recommended following distance at 100 km/h is approximately 100 meters.”

Answer: True – This distance between vehicles is necessary to account for the stopping distance.
