🌿 From the Tea Fields to the Factory Floor as a Manager: Mercy’s Inspiring Journey

Mercy’s journey is what real opportunity looks like.

Ten years ago, Mercy Tonui stepped into the tea industry as a management trainee, eager to understand every step of the journey from bush to cup.

She started in the fields, learning directly from estate teams the precision of agronomy and the art of harvesting tea.

Soon after, she became an Estate Assistant, managing field teams and ensuring the delivery of high-quality green leaf to the factory.
But Mercy wanted to understand the entire value chain.

So she moved into factory operations.

As a Factory Assistant, she mastered the science behind tea manufacture, learning the critical quality parameters that transform fresh leaf into world-class tea.

Today, Mercy is an Assistant Factory Manager, overseeing the entire processing floor, driving continuous improvement, and coordinating field and factory teams to produce exceptional tea.

Her journey reflects more than personal ambition. It reflects opportunity.

At Browns Plantations in Kenya, comprising 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 PLC and 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱, empowering women has been a deliberate journey.

In 2014, women in leadership roles were in the single digits. Today, over 39% of leadership roles are held by women.

That is not just a statistic. It is transformation. It is opportunity. It is generational change.

Mercy represents thousands of women across our value chain, from field to factory to global markets, proving that Kenyan agriculture has a powerful female voice.

As we approach International Women's Day, we celebrate women like Mercy who are shaping the future of agriculture.

Because when women rise:
✔ Families grow stronger
✔ Communities become more resilient
✔ Industries become more sustainable

🌍 The future of engineering may already be growing in our communities.

From classrooms in and to university engineering labs across Kenya, young people are turning their dreams into innovations that will shape a more sustainable world.

Among them are Engineer Sharon and Engineer Sheila — two inspiring young engineers representing hundreds of students whose engineering journeys have been supported through education and mentorship.

One message from a recent graduate captures this impact perfectly:

“It is with great joy and deep appreciation that I write to inform you that I graduated! Your support made it possible for me to pursue my studies without financial strain and stay focused on my goals. Thank you for investing in my future and believing in me.”

Today, as the world marks 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, we celebrate engineers everywhere who are using innovation and technology to solve the world’s biggest challenges.

At Browns Plantations in Kenya, we believe engineering talent exists everywhere — but opportunity does not.

That is why we invest in education, mentorship, and opportunities for young engineers across our communities.

Our impact at a glance

✔️ Hundreds of students supported through engineering and STEM scholarships
✔️ 80+ currently studying engineering and STEM courses in Kenyan public universities
✔️ 30+ young women supported through the Girls in Engineering Scholarship at Moi Tea Girls School
✔️ 32 science laboratories built in secondary schools supporting 1,200+ girls pursuing engineering and science
✔️ Mentorship programs reaching 8,000+ girls in eight schools
✔️ Internship, attachment and employment opportunities for young engineers within our companies

Engineering is not just about technology. It is about empowering people to solve real problems and build a better future.

And that future will be stronger when every talented young person, girls and boys alike, has the opportunity to learn, innovate, and lead.

Through education and opportunity, Browns Plantations continues to nurture the engineers who will build tomorrow’s sustainable world.

🌍 What if the farms growing your tea were also restoring Kenya’s forests?

Too often, biodiversity is talked about.

We believe it must be built into how we farm.

Not someday.

Right now.

On , we’re proud to share that conservation at Browns Plantations in Kenya is not a side project, it’s built into how we farm.

🌳 Over 10% of our tea estates are preserved as natural forests.
Real biodiversity sanctuaries.

Home to native birds, beneficial insects, and wildlife that help maintain natural ecological balance.

Because when nature thrives, farming thrives.

💧 We protect rivers through forested buffer zones that:
• Prevent soil erosion
• Safeguard water quality
• Protect aquatic life

And beyond our estates?

We are helping restore 60,000 hectares of the Southwest Mau Forest through the Initiative for Sustainable Landscapes (ISLA), protecting one of Kenya’s most critical water towers.

🌲 1,000,000+ trees planted.

And counting.

The future of tea depends on the future of nature.

And the future of nature depends on what we protect today.

A Safe Birth Should Never Be a Miracle

In many parts of Kenya, pregnancy and childbirth are still filled with fear and uncertainty.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Imagine this:
A mother walks into a health facility in labour.
She leaves holding a healthy baby in her arms.

This is the future we are building together.

At 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱, part of 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗜𝗻 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮, we are investing in safer beginnings for mothers and newborns.

Here’s what we’ve done through our Community Trust:

✔️ Built a new maternity ward at Nyabangi Dispensary in Kabianga, Belgut, Kericho County, supporting 10,000+ people across Kabianga Ward.

✔️ Recently broke ground on a KES 8.5 million health project at Chepchabas Health Centre in Konoin, Bomet County. The project is progressing well and, once complete, will support over 20,000 people across Chepchabas, Kipsigis Highlands, Chebangang, Kapsinendet, and neighbouring communities.

Because these are more than buildings.

They are places where lives are saved and dreams begin.

💡 Did you know?

Access to quality maternity care can dramatically reduce maternal and newborn deaths.

By investing in health today, we are building stronger communities for tomorrow.
