ARGUMENTS FOR THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY

Happy Solemnity - August 15th

Was Mary Assumed Into Heaven?

Several Bible passages offer implicit evidence that Mary was assumed into heaven. Both Enoch and Elijah were assumed into heaven (Heb. 11:5, 2 Kgs. 2:11). Also, in Matthew 27:52-53 one can read about saints whose bodies left the grave after the Resurrection of Christ.

The early resurrection of these saints anticipated the rising of those who die in faith, all of who will be assumed one day to receive their glorified bodies.

Belief in the assumption of Mary is simply the belief that God granted her this gift early, as he appears to have done for others in Matthew 27:52-53.

The Scriptures also promise that those who suffer with Christ will be glorified with him (Rom. 8:17), so it is fitting that she whose heart was pierced through her Son’s suffering would receive her glorification in a unique manner.

Paul calls Christians “God’s co-workers” (1 Cor. 3:9), and there was no co-worker of Christ who was linked so intimately in the work of salvation as was Mary.

Here are a few of the basic passages that support Mary’s assumption:

1. Revelation 12:1 “And a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun.” Verse 5: “She brought forth a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron.”

2. Psalms 45:9-10 “On your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir.” This Psalm is a prophecy of Jesus according to Hebrews 1:8-9. And it says there will be a woman beside Him who will sit at His right hand.

3. “The New Eve” The early Christians compared Jesus to Adam and Mary to Eve because Adam and Eve were part of our fall while Jesus and Mary were part of our redemption. They were not subject to death because they were prepared by God to destroy death along with the sin of Adam and Eve which we inherit. Also, Adam and Eve would not have been subject to death if they had not disobeyed God. Jesus and Mary took the place of Adam and Eve in the New Covenant except they obeyed God’s will. They don’t inherit death because death is the result of the original sin.

4. “The New Ark” The early Christians also compared Mary to the Ark of the Covenant because the Ark of the Covenant carried the presence of God for the Israelites in the Old Testament, and Mary carried Jesus in the New Testament. 1 Kings 8:1-6 explains how the Ark was brought into Solomon’s Temple, and other Scriptures, including 2 Chronicles 6:41-42 and Psalms 132, say that this was a prophetic symbol of something the Messiah would do. Since Mary is the New Ark, this indicates that the Messiah was going to take His Mother into the New Temple and that Temple is in heaven, Heb. 9:24, Heb. 8:5.

5. A historical argument for Mary’s Assumption is the argument from relics. The argument from relics is that we possess no relics of Mary’s body. We know from books like the Martyrdom of Polycarp (and the Acts of the Apostles) that relics of the early Church leaders were considered very venerable. Relics of Mary, therefore, would be specially prized. The Apostles’ bones and relics are visible in various places today, but no bodily relics have ever been claimed of Mary. This indicates that everybody knew her body was in heaven.

*OUR LADY OF KIBEHO*

*DAY 6*
The apparitions were more or less long according to the cases, generally marked by heavy falls at the end of the Ecstasies.
The apparitions were also marked by an abundance of words, the length of the Ecstasies, songs, prayers of intercession, blessings (expecially by means of water) repeated falls during a same apparition on certain days (from August 15,1982 till the end of the lent of 1983),and other mortifying sufferings. The lent of 1983 was in particular characterized by extraordinary fasting that has been closely followed by a team of physicians of the national university of Rwanda.
*Alphosine Mumureke* is said to have done on March 20th, 1982 a "mystical journey" of several hour with the virgin in another "world" throughout "places" that she describes in a symbolic language that makes think to the realities of the such as hell, purgatory, and Heaven, but with a vocabulary all different from the one of the catechism. *Nathalie Mukamazimpaka* had a similar experience on october 30th, 1982 well followed by a team of the theological commission.
The apparitions of *kibeho* had quiet earlier made the effect to attract the crowd people. On certain days, like on May 31st or August 15th, 1982 for example, the crowd could be estimated to be more than 10,000 people of all ages and all social categories. However it is true that this public stayed a long time multi-colored,because, nearby the pilgrims coming, for the reasons of faith and piety, there were probably a crowd of curious people who were merely in search of an easy marvelous. The situation decanted itself gradually.
The strong time of meaningful apparitions ended practically in 1983,during which the most presumed seers then known by the public, left the scene, one after the other, declaring that the apparitions were finished for them, except *Alphosine*, whose rarefaction of her apparitions had however become an evidence before December 1982.
From 1984,only some secondary so - called seers coming late on the scene had public apparitions to stereotype dates and to very occasional intervals
, but without originalities nor new contribution to the message of *kibeho*
The apparitions of *kibeho* officially ended on November 28th 1989,a date on which *Alphosine*, who was at the beginning of these events, had the virgin's last apparition in public. She specified that she would not have anymore apparition publicly. This meaningful fact intervened 8 years after the virgin's first apparition at *kibeho*, is commonly appreciated like an important historical reference for anybody who would like to know what happened and to form a judgment on it. This date, November 28th, 1989 is kept by the competent ecclesiastical authority as the time limit for the happening of these phenomena.
The length of the apparitions of *kibeho* in the time was remarkably long, a lot of words have been said, and a lot of facts, more or less mysterious, happened with the passing years. But the phenomenon of proliferation of the presumed seers in the region of kibeho as throughout the whole country had really a diverting effect for a lot of pilgrims as well for the people officially in charge to follow closely the evolution of these events, so, on November 28th 1982,one year after the first apparition of *Alphosine*, the presumed seers listed in the file of the investigations is commissions were already at the number of of 14;and on November 28th 1983,they were 33men! Most of them being girls. Some pretended have to have seen the virgin Mary, others Jesus. In short, the situation had become strongly very complicated!
In most of cases, an easy credulity or an excess "religious" respect towards the so-called seers seems to have contributed in some sense to their proliferation. Some of them have even seen circulating in some regions of the country spreading out the messages, without consent of the ecclesiastical competent.

*OUR LADY OF KIBEHO*

*DAY 6*

4th class of teaching pedagogy section as a seer. *Maria claire* is known for the rosary of the *seven sorrows of the virgin mary*;associated to an urgent call to the repentance :*"repent, repent, repent*" said the virgin to the world by the *Marie Claire's* lips.
If for someone, the increased number of the seers occured to complicate more disconcerting situation created by Alphosine ;for others. The two new cases, expecially the one of the *Marie Claire* have been interpreted like a good sign coming from heaven to show that the prayer of *Alphosine* had been accepted and to sustain the faith of all those that were still hesitating to take as serious her apparitions.
Different witnesses interrogated in the *kibeho College* 1982,declared that they have begun to believe in the apparitions. After the extraordinary experience of *Marie Claire* in the public opinion made everything to find out a natural explanation to the phenomenon, but without success, considering a great number of astonishing facts that passed the simple human understanding and were confirmed as the days passed.
Inspite of critics and the objections of all sorts against the apparitions, a movement of adherence began to develop itself enough quickly inside and outside *kibeho College*. Before the christmas holidays of 1981, a group of "converted students and teachers" appeared to a regular prayer meeting with *Alphosine*, where they recited the rosary accompanied by hymns in the honour of the blessed virgin Mary. But, since may 1982,the phenomenon of the apparitions was going to take a new dimension, when it was spreading such a fire of Bush outside the *kibeho College* to reach the primary school and the sorrounding hills.Even the more remote localities. However, it's astonishing that the number of seers inside the college spontaneously stopped earlier once for all to the three, without an outside intervention of human authority.
On the other hand the number of new presumed seers kept on increasing outside of the college in a disturbing way. Later from from July 1982,it was even question of presumed apparitions of Jesus. That was seven months later after the beginning of the apparitions of the virgin Mary, but the time passing the presumed seers of Jesus, well known by the pilgrims of kibeho ended up by progressing into a troubling and disqualifying way.
Another fact to be underlined is that on the day of public apparitions, there were practically no ecstasies. Neither at the same time nor in a group. The seers had individually each apparitions or one by one, taking turn each other on the place, the same day or while benefiting alone almost exclusive celestial visit.

*OUR LADY OF KIBEHO*
*DAY 4*
Today we are going to look at a very important figure as far as Gikongoro diocese is concerned and kibeho at large. His lordship CELESTINE HAKIZIMANA, the bishop of Gikongoro and the apostolic administrator of Cyangugu diocese.

*CELESTINE HAKIZIMANA*
When the 1994 Genocide started, Tutsis who feared being killed, flocked churches and other places of sanctuary but many did not survive.

Killers could force their way in and thousands were massacred. Others were fed to the killers by the men of God.

However, hundreds of Tutsis who had taken refuge at Saint Paul Church in downtown Kigali found a safe haven courtesy of then Father Celestin Hakizimana.

Hakizimana, who is now a bishop, welcomed whoever came to him and committed to do all he could to protect them. The first thing that came to his mind was that the people were innocent and deserved protection.

“I believed they were innocent and only deserved protection,” he told The New Times in an exclusive interview held in Nyamagabe town in Southern Province.

He is currently the Bishop of Gikongoro, and acting bishop of Cyangugu Diocese, after the demise of its predecessor.

Hakizimana says that at the height of the Genocide, he managed to convince security guards who worked at the church not to allow the marauding militia onto the church premises.

This, he said, was not an easy task, given that the Interahamwe already knew that thousands of Tutsi were hiding there.

“I could stand at the gate in my robes, face the Interahamwe militia and tell them that we had no enemy but innocent people. If they wanted to fight the enemy they should go to the battlefield,” he notes.

“Everyone stayed indoors, terrified. We fed them and found water for them to drink and wash and children were given special care. We had enough stock so we were lucky that we didn’t run short of food,” he added.

Dealing with militiamen
However, it was not enough for him to feed them and his protection was not granted.

Hakizimana had to deal with several Interahamwe attacks that left him threatened every time they came, leaving him unsure if he would be successful the next day.

“Sometimes I paid them off to leave without killing anybody, I also offered them food and drinks as a price though sometimes they returned and picked people whom they killed,” he says he managed to protect them until mid-June.

He remembers that on a single day, Interahamwe came on three different occasions; once the militiamen came and took about seven people, another time they took twenty while on another they took 50 people. All of these were killed.

“Then another time they came in a huge gang from Kiyovu, Rugenge and Muhima sectors some wearing military fatigues, while others adorned the Interahamwe attire of African print (Kitenge), equipped with fire arms and traditional weapons,” he says.

“They came with a list of 20 people they wanted but I told them we did not have those people, I challenged them that the list was also not signed but they took it and got it signed,” he says.

Hakizimana had registered everyone at the church but he hid the list and presented another one with made up names. Most of the people were well-known and top targets for the killers.

“When they came back with a signed list, they entered the church but could not see those they wanted, they picked about 20 men, tied them up and they killed them from the nearby Rugenge Sector,” he narrated.

Hakizimana still remembers that only one person survived.

“After they killed them, they came to PanAfrique hotel that was nearby and held a party that they had killed Tutsis”.

“Whenever they took people it was a crisis; people became hopeless, the worst day was when Interahamwe took over 50 of the youth. Their parents begged to be taken instead. We had to give those who remained counselling sessions and prayed together. It was a serious issue to deal with."

He said that as days went by, the militiamen got more and more vicious and the prelate says he knows he did not have much time left to offer protection to these people let alone for himself.

“We were left in sorrow and waited to also be killed, the most unfortunate thing was that 10 days after that attack, the others rescued,” he added.

RPA rescue operation, a relief
During the night of July 16, Rwanda Patriotic Army soldiers planned an operation that rescued the over 2,000 Tutsi who hid at St Paul.

For this cleric, the soldiers were “God Sent” as they saved lives of many who could have been killed as the Interahamwe were becoming more violent.

“What I thank RPA soldiers for is their resilience, the courage and professionalism they exhibited to snake through Saint Paul despite roadblocks by FAR soldiers and Interahamwe who fought them,” he said.

“We would all have been killed in less than a week hadn’t it been RPA soldiers, we also remained with little food and we were running short of water, you see, the two months we spent was a long time,” he says.

Despite the successful rescue operation and the Tutsis who had survived were receiving care and treatment by RPA soldiers, it was a different story from Radio Television Libre de Mille Collines (RTLM), an extremist station.

According to Hakizimana, the next morning it broadcast news that hundreds of Tutsis had been killed along with RPA soldiers who had come to rescue them,

“After the Genocide, when peace had been restored, we would with those who survived, hug and laugh as we reflected on the period."

“It is always a time of joy, we would support each other and nobody wanted to cry again,” he said.

He said that many survivors have over the years offered him cows.

“I have received at least 10 cows while others have offered me money and other gifts to thank me,” he said.

He said that he has also received a medal in recognition of his effort to protect his flock.

On priests who turned against flock
Hakizimana was just one of the very few priests who stood between their flock and the killers.

The case was different for his colleagues; while some chose to either send away those that ran to them for protection, others openly worked with the militiamen to kill those that had ran to them.

Hakizimana says that there was no direct incitement by the Church for the clergy to commit the Genocide, there was a glaring role by some of his colleagues, whom he insists did it in their personal capacities.

He gave an example of Fr. Athanase Seromba of Nyange Parish who ordered that a bulldozer demolish church killing over 3,000 who had sought refuge there.

Seromba was convicted and handed a life sentence by the UN backed International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).

There is also Wenceslas Munyeshyaka who was the parish priest at Sainte Famille Church, just a few metres from Saint Paul.

Munyeshyaka was notorious and worked closely with the Interahamwe militia as well senior government and military officials at the time, and they were always seen together at the church premises.

According to survivors, Munyeshyaka, who to this date continues to carry on his clerical work in Franch, used to carry with him a pistol tucked under his sleeveless camouflaged flak jacket and behaved like militia.

He was ruthless in his sermons and talked all sorts of evil things, calling the Tutsi ‘cockroaches’ that deserved nothing but death.

Though Bishop Hakizimana can’t accuse anybody openly and leaves the matter to justice, he says that some priests forgot what they stood for and associated themselves with the killers.

“Some priests failed to honour their oaths and turned against their flock. There was tension in the 1990s and some priests harassed Tutsis calling them names. Their role in the Genocide did not come as a surprise, the mistake priests made was that they failed to dissociate themselves with Interahamwe and befriended extemist politicians,” he said.

“For the case of Munyeshyaka we had some disagreement. There was a time when people who had fled to Sainte Famille were attacked and I opened the small door as a shortcut but Munyeshyaka wondered why I wanted to protect Tutsis who were fleeing nothing,” narrated the Bishop.

“Munyeshyaka is a suspect because he befriended genocidal forces and government officials. Second, he behaved like a soldier and could be seen with bullet proof jackets and carried a pistol. He once asked me why I did not get a gun to protect myself but I told him I was not a soldier. He would harass Tutsi priests in public calling them cockroaches.

For Seromba, the bishop says he was ruthless by nature and was always proud that he originated from Gisenyi area where most of the senior government and military officials came from.

“He could call people RPF accomplices, and during the Genocide he continued collaborating with soldiers. It was his nature, it was a personal weakness that he grew up with,” he noted.

*OUR LADY OF KIBEHO APPARITIONS **

*DAY 3*
Today we are going to look at the following :

*Words uttered by the blessed virgin Mary on her very first apparitions in Kibeho*
On Saturday *28/11/1981,at 12:35 pm*. The virgin mary appeared in kibeho for the very first time to *Alfosine Mumureke*. This young giri (16years old in the first form in girls college) was with the other students in the dining room, ready for their lunch. The virgin Mary called Alfosine : *"Mwana*-child" This is the first word of mother Mary in kibeho.

What can this mean? Even if mother Mary knew Alfosine was by her name, she chose the meaningful way in kinyarwanda *"Mwana*" or "my dear child" to address you and me as her own children ( *jh19:27-28*)

In that first conversation, Alfosine asked this *"visitor*" who she was, and the answer she received is *"Ndi nyina* *wa jambo*"-"Lam the mother of the word". This becoming the second word.
"Lam the mother of the word" meaning"lam the mother of God "(told later to the 2nd visionary, *Nathalie Mukamazimpaka*)

BY these words, she names herself with the highest attribute as mother. She underlines the power with which she comes from heaven for our sake. She knew from heaven that we were running a high school risk to fall into the abyss.

The mother whom Jesus gave to me carries an important message:lam her child, she is my mother. All what she said here is addressed to me and lam a messenger as well

DAY 1
Today we will start with a PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF KIBEHO

Blessed virgin mary, MOTHER OF THE WORD, mother of all those who believe in Him and who keep Him in their life, we look upon you in contemplation.
Even though we do not see you with our eyes we believe that you are with us, like a mother in the midst of her children.
You, who are the infallible pathway to Jesus the Saviour, we thank you for the favours obtained in our life.
Expecially since you have humbly chosen to appear in KIBEHO , at the very time the world needed it most.
Grant us always light and strength to keep worthy in us your Message of conversion and repentance for. And to live according to the Gospel of your son
Teach us how to pray without hypocrisy and to love one another as He loved us, so that, as you willed, we may always be beautiful flowers that produce nice flavors to everyone and everywhere.
Virgin mary, OUR LADY OF SORROWS , Grant us to understand the value of the cross in our life, so that we may fill up in our flesh what is lacking in the
Affliction of Christ on behalf of His body which is the church. And when comes the end of our pilgrimage on earth, let us live with you for eternity in the heavenly kingdom. Amen
