MOST CALVES DON’T FAIL DURING MILK FEEDING—THEY FAIL DURING WEANING!
You’ve fed the calf well…
It’s growing…
Then suddenly👇
👉 You stop milk the wrong way
And everything goes down.
🐄 WHAT IS WEANING?
👉 Gradually stopping milk and transitioning the calf to solid feeds.
BIGGEST MISTAKE FARMERS MAKE:
Abrupt weaning (stopping milk suddenly)
📌 This causes:
❌ Stress
❌ Weight loss
❌ Poor growth
❌ Disease (especially pneumonia)
✅ WHEN SHOULD YOU WEAN A CALF?
👉 NOT by age alone!
✔️ A calf is ready when it eats at least 1–1.5 kg of calf starter per day
✔️ Usually around 6–8 weeks
🥛 HOW TO WEAN THE RIGHT WAY:
✔️ Reduce milk gradually over 7–14 days
✔️ Encourage more calf starter intake
✔️ Always provide clean water
✔️ Maintain consistency (no sudden changes)
🌱 WHY CALF STARTER IS IMPORTANT:
👉 It develops the rumen
📌 No starter = poor digestion later in life
🏠 MANAGEMENT DURING WEANING:
✔️ Keep housing dry and stress-free
✔️ Avoid mixing with older animals immediately
✔️ Monitor closely for sickness
🔥 REAL TALK:
Weaning is not just stopping milk…
👉 It is transitioning the calf into a future milk-producing machine.
📌 Good weaning = Strong rumen = Fast growth = High production cow
