Throughout our conscious life, we’re constantly engulfed in decision making moments. Of all the decisions we make, the decision on personal welfare is the greatest as it defines our chances of survival. However, if the survival of another person is entirely based on your negotiation competence, would you save them or not?

Over the years, stand-off situations have been presumed to be a reserve for the movies and even if they happen in real life, the law enforcers take control. This has led to most of us not willing to be competently adequately equipped and prepared for hostage situations management.

In case you’re in such situation, ensure:
》 You gther basic information. If you’re the actual hostage carefully note the basic information about the location & hostage takers tone, facial, dressing, equipment used among others.

》 Understanding. Carefully get to know what the hostage takers want before you engage them. Rushing to quick conclusions with scanty information, will reduce your success chances.

》 Respect. As you engage your hostage takers, remember they are human being as you’re and are subject to feelings, emotions and any form of disrespect could complicate the situation.

》 Time. Every hostage taker hopes for a smooth and fast process to attain their goal. A prolonged process may frustrate the hostage takers and burst up everything but it can as well drain them to their weakest levels of submission.

》 Communication. It’s not what you but how you say it that makes the impact. Ensure the flow of messages from your end to the hostage takers and vice versa is effective and efficient.

During an hostage eg kidnapping, the hostage taker holds captives against their will and use them as a security for their kin to perform some specific conditions. Hostage situation varies from an individual restraining themselves to groups, organisations, and even nations holding others captive.

While reasons for various hostages situations vary, you should be able to discern a prevailing crisis as any of the following:
》 Criminal - deadly but the easiest to handle.
》 Psychotics - very delicate and complicated to handle.
》 Terrorism - most dangerous as captors are ready for any outcome.

Disaster Management.
While still recovering from covid-19 pandemic followed by the Russia vs Ukraine war which has almost caused glocal food chain & energy crisis, the just recent 7.5 magnitude earthquake affecting Cyprus, Türkiye, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Georgia, and Armenia with huge faamges being felt in Tùrkiye & Syria claiming about 29,000 human lives so far, is another reminder that the difference between two extremely opposite situations eg life & death, happiness & agony is as thin as the neck of the calabash.

Historically, when disasters strike, many think we've wronged the God's and that their wrath is upon us. However, science has proven that alibi is wrong. Disasters, including but not limited to earthquakes, draught, fires, wars etc don't just happen but have got both root and immediate causes mostly from mother nature or human activities; things don't just happen and there are no coincidences is life.

In many cases during a crisis situation, human beings will manifest, denial, deliberations, and decision-making stages during which weather you ultimately overreact or underreact the casualty will endure the unpleasant situation at hand The severity of the crisis shall be directly as well as inversely determined by the level of preparedness as well as the reactive efforts made.

For a sound disaster Management and recovery process:
》 You must be aware of the possible disasters likely to strike your environment.
》 From every kind of disaster noted, put relevant preparedness measures.
》 Identfy your health or support sources both internal & external.
》 Don't complicate the crisis for the responders ie don't be quick to post on social media.
》 Being rational and using common sense is key to every situation management.

But the bigger question is:
》 Of your contacts how many can helpful in case of a crisis?
》 Do you have alternative access route or point to your home / workplace?
》 Are you conversant with the basic first aid skills to save a life?
》 Can you or any other family member or colleague fight fire?
》 Do you have any knowledge to negotiate a hostages situation?..There lies X

Literary no one can be perfectly prepared & free from all forms of disasters (emergencies) in life. This is why even with improved technologies, awareness, better living stabdards among others disasters keep claiming lives to date. However, one can be prepared to a considerable level to manage the incidences and smoothly recover from the ordeal to normalcy.

Preparedness and actual response to an incidence have great impact to one's survival, property damage and environmental degradation. For instance;
》 If you're in a confined space eg office and hear a blast outside, don't rush to the windows to overlook. This might present you to debris eg galss from breaking items that would harm you.

》 In case of a tremor of whatever magnitude, drop anything you might be carrying, cling to a strong point of the building eg a pillar and avoid holding on to or hiding under loose items that would move freely eg furniture.

》 In case of an attack eg live shooter, try and take cover in secure places. Don't rush to fight back but take time to analyse the situation. However, if the situation worsens and you've got no other choice, fight the enemy with anything available; don't go down easily.

》 If you're outdoor and for unknown reason eg human scream, blast, fight etc and people stream towards a specific spot, don't join the crew as that might be a bait to attract masses and perhaps strike.

》 Avoid walking along crowded routes and specifically between people obstructing your front, back and sides. Clearly be able to change your course of directions easily.

》 When in unfamiliar places eg buildings don't stay far from an access point entry or exit. If possible be at focal point where you can monitor movement from the majority of the occupants.
