Plastic Crates in Kenya: The Complete Buyer's Guide (2026)

Sizes, Prices, Uses, and How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Crate

If you're a farmer in Kirinyaga,Meru,Narok,Eldoret,Kiambu,Laikipia,Kitale,Kitengela,Mombasa moving farm produce to the Market Market, a baker in Eastleigh delivering bread before sunrise, a butcher in Burma needing crates that survive bleach and bone, a poultry farmer in Kiambu, a fishmonger in Gikomba, or a procurement officer at a supermarket chain, at some point you've stood in front of a stack of plastic crates and wondered which one you actually need, and whether you're being overcharged.

This guide answers that. No sales pitch. Just everything we've learned from years inside Kenya's plastic crate trade.

Quick Answer: What Crate Do You Need?

Most buyers in Kenya end up choosing from six standard crate categories. The small vented crate measures roughly 395 by 290 by 190 millimetres, holds about 15 litres, and is used for tomatoes, capsicum, chillies, mangoes, and small fish. The standard vegetable crate measures around 500 by 300 by 150 millimetres, holds about 20 litres, and is the workhorse for sukuma wiki, kale, French beans, and supermarket display. The medium multipurpose crate, around 566 by 386 by 238 millimetres and about 40 litres, handles general storage, hardware, light parts, and retail. The bread crate, perforated and roughly 565 by 480 by 138 millimetres, is the standard for bakery delivery and packaged bread. Beverage and dairy crates, around 400 by 300 by 280 millimetres, are built to hold about 24 bottles of milk, soda, beer, or water. Heavy-duty industrial crates, 600 by 400 by 320 millimetres or larger and ranging from 30 to 100 litres, are for meat, fish, factory parts, and warehouse stacking.

Sizes vary slightly between manufacturers. Always confirm internal dimensions if you're stacking, palletising, or fitting into a vehicle.

Section One: What Plastic Crates Actually Cost in Kenya in 2026

Most buyers get quoted wildly different prices for the same crate. Here's the real picture across the Kenyan market right now.
Why do prices vary so much? Four reasons.

First, virgin versus recycled plastic. Virgin food grade polypropylene costs more but lasts five to eight years in daily use. Recycled crates can crack within a year, especially in direct sun.

Second, wall thickness. A 2.5 millimetre wall crate weighs differently from a 4 millimetre wall crate. Pick one up. The heavier one almost always lasts longer.

Third, order volume. Buying ten crates is retail. Buying two hundred is wholesale. Buying a thousand or more moves you into manufacturer territory, where you can negotiate twenty five to forty percent off retail.

Fourth, customisation. Branded crates with your logo and your colour usually carry a fifteen to thirty percent premium and a minimum order of two to five hundred pieces.

Honest advice: if a seller's price is forty percent below market, the plastic is recycled, the wall is thin, or both. You'll buy twice.

Section Two: The Twelve Most Common Use Cases Matched to the Right Crate

This is where most buyers go wrong. They pick the cheapest crate that looks right and lose money on broken stock, spoilage, or rejected deliveries. Match the crate to the job.

For tomatoes and soft fruit like mangoes, avocados, and passion fruit, use a vented small or medium crate. Solid wall crates suffocate fruit and accelerate ripening in transit. Look for sidewall ventilation, not just bottom holes.

For sukuma wiki, kale, and spinach, use a standard vegetable crate with side ventilation. Stack no more than six high or you crush the bottom layer.

For bread and baked goods, use a perforated bread crate, food grade. The perforation is not decoration. It lets steam escape so bread doesn't go soggy in transit.

For milk in bottles or sachets, use a beverage crate with bottle dividers, or a solid wall medium crate for sachets. It must be easy to sanitise.

For meat and butchery work, use a solid wall food grade crate with smooth interior and no perforation. You need to contain blood and liquid. It must survive daily bleach wash.

For fresh fish, use an insulated crate if going long distance, otherwise solid wall heavy duty with drain holes. Iced fish destroys cheap crates within weeks.

For eggs, use egg trays inside a standard crate or dedicated egg crates. Never load eggs directly into a vegetable crate. Vibration kills your margin.

For live poultry transport, use a ventilated poultry crate specifically designed with low height and wide ventilation. Don't substitute a vegetable crate. Birds suffocate or get injured.

For soda, beer, and water bottles, use a beverage crate with moulded bottle slots. Stackable. Heavy duty walls, because full crates can weigh fifteen to twenty kilograms.

For supermarket back of store storage, use a medium multipurpose crate, stackable, ideally with attached lids if storing dry goods.

For warehouse and logistics work with hardware, spare parts, or electronics, use a heavy duty industrial crate, sometimes with locking lids. Look for stackable and nestable designs to save space when empty.

For bulk industrial use such as factory components, recycling, or waste, use large solid wall crates with a 600 by 400 base or larger. Look for forklift compatible bases if you're loading onto pallets.

Section Three: How to Spot a Bad Crate Before You Pay

This section alone is worth the price of every crate you'll ever buy.

Press the corners with your thumb. If the plastic flexes inward easily, the wall is too thin. A good crate barely gives.

Look at the colour evenly. Streaks, swirls, or off colour patches usually mean recycled plastic. Recycled isn't always bad, but it should never be sold at virgin prices.

Smell it. A strong chemical smell means poor quality recycled feedstock. It will also taint food.

Check the rim. Run your finger along the top edge. Sharp burrs, rough seams, or uneven moulding mean the crate was made on a tired machine. It will crack at those points first.

Stack two crates. They should sit flush and lock slightly. Wobbling means warped moulding. They'll topple under load.

Ask for a food grade certificate if you're storing food, milk, meat, or bread. Reputable Kenyan manufacturers will provide one. Hesitation is a red flag.

Section Four: Stackable, Nestable, and Collapsible. What These Words Actually Mean

Sellers throw these terms around. Here's the difference.

Stackable means crates sit on top of each other when full. This saves floor space when loaded.

Nestable means empty crates fit inside each other. This saves space when returning empties. Most Kenyan vegetable crates are nestable.

Stack nest, the hybrid, means crates stack when full and nest when empty. This is the best of both worlds. Slightly more expensive but pays for itself in transport.

Collapsible or foldable means the walls fold flat when empty. These are used in supermarket distribution. They save up to seventy five percent of return trip space but cost two to three times more.

For most Kenyan SMEs, nestable is the right default. Stack nest is worth it if you run regular delivery routes and pay for return transport.

Section Five: Where Plastic Crates Are Manufactured and Sold in Kenya

Kenya has a well developed plastic crate industry. The main manufacturing clusters are in Industrial Area along Lunga Lunga Road and Enterprise Road, along Mombasa Road, and in Limuru. Kamukunji itself, the historic light industrial heart of Nairobi, is where most wholesale and retail crate trade happens day to day, alongside hardware, agricultural supplies, and food service equipment.

If you're buying in small quantities of one to fifty crates, Kamukunji and the Industrial Area retail outlets are your best bet. You can inspect before you buy, negotiate, and walk away with stock the same day.

For larger orders of two hundred and above, buying directly from manufacturers or established wholesalers gets you better prices, but expect three to fourteen day lead times if your size or colour isn't in stock.

Section Six: Branded and Custom Crates. Is It Worth It?

Custom crates make sense in three situations. When you operate a delivery business and crates get lost at customer sites, where your logo discourages theft and aids return. When you're a brand facing business like a bakery, dairy, or beverage company, and crates double as marketing. And when you're tracking inventory across many sites.

What to expect. Minimum order is typically two to five hundred pieces per colour and design. Lead time is two to six weeks. Premium over standard crates is fifteen to thirty percent. If you want a completely new shape, expect mould tooling costs of KSh 500,000 and above. Most buyers should stick to standard moulds with custom colour and logo.

For most businesses, a custom colour with hot stamped logo on a standard crate gives you ninety percent of the branding benefit at ten percent of the cost.

Section Seven: Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a crate and a container in Kenya? In Kenyan usage, crate usually means an open top, often ventilated box for transport and short term storage. Container often implies a lidded or sealed plastic box. Suppliers use the words loosely. Always confirm dimensions and whether a lid is included.

Are plastic crates food safe by default? No. Only crates made from food grade polypropylene or HDPE are food safe. Cheaper recycled crates may contain industrial plastic. If you're storing food, ask. Don't assume.

How long should a plastic crate last? A good food grade crate in regular use should last five to eight years. Heavy duty industrial crates can last ten years or more. Cheap recycled crates often fail within twelve to eighteen months, especially under UV exposure outdoors.

Can plastic crates be recycled at end of life? Yes, and they should be. Most Kenyan plastic recyclers will buy back HDPE and PP crates for KSh 30 to 60 per kilogram depending on condition. Don't burn them. Burning releases toxic fumes.

Do I need a special crate for export produce? Yes. Export markets like the EU and the Gulf often require crates certified for food contact, sometimes returnable pool crates like IFCO or Euro pool. Confirm requirements with your buyer before ordering crates.

What about plastic crates with wheels? They're available and useful for in store and warehouse moving. Wheels add KSh 800 to 2,500 to crate cost depending on quality. Cheap wheels fail quickly under load. Spend up on the wheels even if you save on the crate.

How high is safe to stack? It depends on wall thickness and contents. Standard vegetable crates can go six to eight high when full. Heavy duty industrial crates can go ten to twelve high. Never stack above shoulder height in a moving vehicle without restraint.

What colours are available? Most Kenyan manufacturers stock red, blue, green, yellow, white, and grey. Colour matters. Red is common for meat, blue for fish, green for vegetables, yellow for bakery, white for dairy. Some industries like export and hospital supply have colour coding regulations.

Can I get crates delivered countrywide? Yes. Most established suppliers ship via Easy Coach, Modern Coast, courier, or own truck for large orders. Expect to pay KSh 300 to 2,000 in delivery depending on volume and distance. Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, and Nakuru routes are well served daily.

Is it cheaper to import crates from China or India? On paper, sometimes. In practice, by the time you add freight, duty of twenty five percent and up, VAT, clearing, and four to eight weeks of waiting, locally made crates are usually cheaper and faster. And you can inspect before buying. Import only if you need a specialty crate not made in Kenya, or if you're ordering containers of a thousand pieces or more of a specific spec.

Section Eight: Buying Checklist. Run Through This Before You Shop

Before you place an order, confirm your exact use case, whether it's food or non food, indoor or outdoor, stationary or in transit. Confirm the required internal dimensions, not just external. Confirm capacity in litres or kilograms of load. Decide between stackable, nestable, or stack nest. Decide ventilated or solid wall. Confirm food grade certification if needed. Confirm colour preference. Ask about quantity discount tiers. Confirm delivery cost and lead time. Ask about warranty or replacement policy. Ask about return or buy back at end of life.

Proven Applications Across Kenya's Diverse Industries

Our HDPE drums serve countless essential functions across Kenya's economy. In the agricultural sector, dairy farmers in Kiambu, Nyeri, and Nandi counties rely on our drums for storing milk before collection, fermenting silage, creating feeding troughs, mixing feed supplements, and storing molasses. Poultry farmers use them for water storage in chicken houses, mixing feed supplements, and creating automatic watering systems.

For food and beverage processing, honey producers across Western Kenya and Mt. Kenya regions trust our food-grade drums for fermenting, storing, and transporting honey products. Small-scale food processors safely store edible oils, fruit syrups, liquid ingredients, and brew traditional beverages like muratina.

Water solutions represent a major use case where small-scale water vendors transport clean drinking water to residential areas with inconsistent municipal supply, particularly common in Eastlands Nairobi and urban settlements. Community water projects establish clean water access points in underserved areas through NGO partnerships and county government initiatives.

Commercial operations benefit significantly as car wash businesses along major roads create economical wash stations using our drums for water storage. Construction companies store and transport non-corrosive chemicals, concrete additives, and water for on-site mixing operations.

Agricultural support services depend on our drums as input suppliers distribute liquid fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and organic manure solutions to farmers nationwide. Horticultural exporters in Naivasha store liquid fertilizers and post-harvest chemicals for flower and vegetable farms.

Aquaculture and water harvesting applications include fish farming operations in Kisumu, Mwea, and Coastal regions that create makeshift ponds, store water, and transport fingerlings. Households across rural and peri-urban areas implement DIY rainwater harvesting systems using rooftop collection during Kenya's biannual rainy seasons.
