📐 UNDERSTANDING AND DESCRIPTION OF FOUNDATION SET-OUT USING BATTER BOARDS
This image illustrates the process of "setting out" or marking the precise location and dimensions of a building's foundations on a construction site using a system of stakes and string lines called batter boards. This technique is crucial for ensuring the foundation is square, level, and correctly sized before excavation begins.
The image is split into two parts, 3a and 3b, detailing the overall setup and a close-up of a corner, respectively.
PART 3A: OVERALL SET-OUT LAYOUT
This section shows the entire building outline marked on the ground.
• Batter Boards (Profiles): These are the wooden frameworks set up around the perimeter of the planned building. They consist of stakes driven into the ground with horizontal cross-members (the batter boards).
• String Lines: String lines stretched between profiles mark the exact outside line of foundations. They represent the edges of the planned footing and/or walls.
• Corner Marking: The string lines are carefully positioned so that they intersect precisely over the corners of the future building.
• Checking for Squareness (Diagonals): The label points out that diagonals are equal length if building set-out is square or rectangular. Measuring the diagonal distances across the set-out is the primary method used on-site to verify that all the corners are perfect 90-degree angles.
• Sloping Site Consideration: A profile is labeled high profiles at lower end of a sloping site. This shows how batter boards are used to establish a level reference plane across the entire site, even if the ground is uneven.
PART 3B: DETAIL OF A CORNER AND BATTER BOARD
This close-up section illustrates the precision required at a corner and the specific components of the batter board assembly.
• Batter Board Construction: The assembly includes a stake driven into the ground, braces in both directions for stability, and a horizontal batter board brace (the cross-member).
• String Line Placement: A taut string line runs across the batter board. These boards allow the string lines to be moved and adjusted precisely without disturbing the corner point on the ground.
• Locating the Corner: A plumb bob to locate corner is shown hanging from the intersection of the two string lines. This tool uses gravity to drop a point precisely from the strings' intersection down to the ground, marking the exact position of the foundation corner with a peg.
• Set-Out Distances: The string lines are marked with dimensions (3.000, 4.000, 5.000) demonstrating the use of a 3-4-5 right triangle to check set-out to make sure it is square. If the lines are exactly 3 units and 4 units from the corner, the diagonal distance between those two points must be 5 units for the corner to be square (Pythagorean theorem: 3² + 4² = 5²).
• Minimum Distance: The profiles minimum 900 mm from building note is a crucial construction rule. The batter boards must be placed far enough away from the foundation line so they are not disturbed when the foundation trenches are excavated.
The image effectively communicates the traditional, reliable method used in construction for accurately defining the position, size, and squareness of a building's foundation on a raw site.
