Real sustainability shows up in the details; verified certification, local ownership, transparent resource management, and genuine community partnerships.

Across Africa, indigenous communities have long had systems of collective decision-making, stewardship, knowledge-sharing and resource management. Yet, in tourism, we often reduce this wealth of knowledge to a “cultural experience” for visitors.

Sustainable tourism should not only ask:

𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒎 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚?

It should also ask:
• Who determines what aspects of culture can be shared or commercialised?
• Who owns the stories being told?
• Who controls the benefits?
• Whose knowledge informs conservation and destination development?
• And importantly, 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼?

Travel & Tourism contributed $228 billion to Africa's economy in 2025, representing 7.0% of regional GDP and growing by 5.0%, significantly outpacing the wider economy, which expanded by 3.5% and the global average.

Kenya is also emerging as a global leader in sustainable tourism. The T&T sector sources 19.9% of its energy from low-carbon sources, significantly outperforming both the global average of 5.9% and the African average of 2.9%.
