Every year, over 300 million tons of plastic are produced. At least 12 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year and make up 80% of all marine debris from surface waters to deep-sea sediments. Floating plastic debris are currently the most abundant items of marine litter.The bad news is that once released into our oceans, plastic never goes away. It does not biodegrade.

To those who are wondering what’s happening at the lake with Massive death of Fish. The lake has thermal stratification due to depth. Periodically the lake experiences what we call upwelling where the different layers mix. This may lead to the bottom waters that is relatively poor in oxygen being pushed up. This results to oxygen deficiency and thus the mass death of fish especially the Nile Peach which is highly intolerant of low oxygen conditions.

Every lake has a set mixing regime that is influenced by lake morphometry and environmental conditions. However, human influences in the form of land use change, warming temperatures, and changes to weather patterns have been shown to alter the timing and intensity of stratification in lakes around the globe. These changes can further alter the fish, zooplankton, and phytoplankton community composition, in addition to creating gradients that alter the availability of dissolved oxygen and nutrients.

And that’s what has happened recently in Lake Victoria, hence the massive death of fish currently being experienced in the Lake Victoria Region.
