Kenya Government Cabinet of Ministers Stands Dissolved – A New Dawn?

Nina Simone’s song “Feel Good” has resonated with me 2+ decades after she first released the beautiful ballad. “.....Breeze drifting by.... you know how I feel, it’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me... and I am FEELING GOOD.......” she sang ....lost in an emotional stupor and evoking a deep sense of hope and determination.

The trajectory our Sons and Daughters have set our beloved country fills my heart with a sense of pride and anticipation, putting to shame we the “BOOMERS” that let things slide to a near state of disrepair. If the new phase of my life is to have meaning, be prosperous with a sense of direction, I have the GEN Z fraternity to thank. The sacrifices they made will remain an indelible mark in my life and will certainly serve to anchor my children pursuit of excellence.

Late this evening, I had a televised conversation with my hosts brian kimani aka O'brien and Cynthia Nyamai which I catalogued as raw. Think sublime questions on matters governance that on occasions had me unsettled.

Where – The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), National Broadcaster, KBC TV channel 1 - Prime Edition.

In discussing the implications of President William Samoei Ruto PHD dissolution of his cabinet, I emphasized the inevitable need to consult GEN Z in setting up a new team and within their preferred space of dialogue as obligatory. I argued the need to dispense with politically engineered appointments and target professionalism.

To a question on whether we had judged the Cabinet Secretaries way too harshly only 2 years into office, I referred the viewers to Michael D Watkins book “The First 90 Days” for perspective. The honeymoon was over. And on why change would be difficult given Government bureaucracy, I submitted that all the citizenry cared for was efficient and effective service delivery, the long held culture notwithstanding.

Granted, our country MUST source public servants competitively in “open source” to attract the best in class and inspire confidence. As to the political class and their proxies, the cheese has moved. It is time to dust those CVs and certificates to pursue alternative careers.

To the President, it is a pivotal moment in his political life. He MUST seize it with zeal, be deliberate in changing the fortunes of our beloved country by placing GEN Z and no one else at the center. Next STOP – Parliament.

Interesting Times Ahead.

Thank You Obrien and Cynthia for having me.

Start-ups and MSMEs – The precious "stone" yet to be uncovered.....!

Delighted to be in your presence first time this year. May 2024 be the year it all happens for you.

Start-ups and MSMEs continue to perform sub-optimally in this region and beyond but well midwifed, it is a critical path towards crystalizing and accelerating economic growth and prosperity.

Being the connector for production and consumption, an enabler for users at the tail end of the process chain, MSMEs is not only the bridge that links but an implement that creates wealth across the value chain, monetized to solve the day to day but fundamental problems of life in the process.

This article looks at the paradox and or conflict between start-ups and MSMEs, an item the author considers a constituent of semantics. But one argument stands true at every level and across geographies and that is that they have a progression relationship. Granted, the attainment of a successful integration between the two is fully reliant on the prudence in the strategic plan (a road map), responsive leadership and astute management.

A MUST read...! The jury is still out but in my considered submission, Governments are yet to fully cognize start-ups and MSMEs phenomenon as well as the dynamics that drive them. This explains the fuzzy interventions that fail to catalyze an otherwise very fluid sector and yes..... a lot more needs to be done. On their part, financial institutions have also failed to scope it right, focused on historical performance and the attendant risks rather than the associated opportunities and possibilities. This stifles the lifeline (credit facility) that ought to fuel the segments to boost innovation and production. Academics and technocrats have failed to inspire new thinking. This begs new findings through scientific research for new operationalization. Historically, known concepts, theories or models can no longer help the sector navigate the vagaries of an increasingly complex external environment (Read VUCA).

Put another way, Start-ups and MSMEs are on auto-pilot.

Do you agree?

I now invite you to enjoy the read...!

To The Tax Prism Magazine, Georgina Musembi, AIHRM, Eunice Njenga, Kelvin Muoki, Dr. Mugambi Mwirigi you remain the embodiment of knowledge creation and dissemination.... The Best in Class. As prayed in an earlier post, please make this issue available to the Cabinet Secretary MSME and his Principal Secretary, other stakeholders such as Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) et al.

Celebrating the Orchestra behind my song in 2022.

An Orchestra is an arrangement of instrumentalists that backs up the singer to bring out the harmony in a song, tune or music. An orchestra enables a singer become adept at picking out cues in their music and to give it the balance for collective melody. Often, the orchestra is in the background, behind the scenes, goes unnoticed yet the drummer provides rhythm and the beat, dictating the tempo and transitions, the lead guitarist gives that unique sound supported by the rhythm that gives accompaniment chords. Then the saxophonist (My best) brings versatility. In the ensemble, I am only a lead vocalist though the prominent and dominant sound.

Looking back at 2022, I set to pivot on what I’d built in 2020/21. With a profile and visibility that I yearned, 2023 is the year I turn the corner.... giving me a measure of excitement and anxiety. But would I be in this spot without help? Certainly not.

The Congo Colossus, Le Grand Maitre, Franco Luambo Luanzo Makiadi of TPOK jazz would not have made it without Le-poet & song writer Simaro Simasiya Lutumba, Seigneur Tabu Ley Rochereau of Afrisa International would have been off without Mekanisi Modero (sax), Pepe Kalle Yampanya would have been flat without Dilu Mona (Animation – Atalaku), Nancy “lite” Ronald Reagan presidency and Alice Muringayi made Oliver Mtukudzi. In the rendition Kaokoko Korobo, Papa Wemba of Viva la Musica would have had no impact without Yves Demukuata (lead guitar). Drew Bundini sensationalized former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Mohammed Ali (The GOAT) corner making us adore him. Think Salif Keita of Mali, or Fally Ipupa with Bienvenue Konga on konga drums.

Making music the authentic and traditional way is a colossal task. My music in 2022 was directed and arranged for me to great effect. She also took to the drums consolidating all moving parts in my song sometimes unbeknown to me. On extended periods of time, she was the wind below my wings allowing me to soar unrelentingly like an eagle when I fly. Like Lutumba at TPOK jazz, she made me dare, bringing my music to life....... Ladies and Gentlemen, I celebrate my gorgeous and loving wife Irene Chami for taking this journey with me and pushing me beyond my limit.

My song reverberates because of the orchestra you bring into my life. Thank you love..... Be Blessed.

With the greatest appreciation......
