*Semen handling and insemination*
• It’s important to take care when storing and handling AI. This is because rough handling, temperature shock and exposure to light can all damage semen. • If the storage temperature fluctuates beyond the minimum or maximum recommended figures, motility can fall and s***m agglutination can occur – this is when s***m stick together. If this happens, it decreases the total number of s***m per dose.

*Key information*
• Storage temperature should be within the range of 15–19°C.
• Semen is extremely temperature sensitive and shelf life is significantly shortened above 19°C. Viability is reduced and s***m may even suffer cold shock and die below 15°C.
• Never store semen in a conventional refrigerator (2–8°C) or at room temperature (>20°C)
• A cooler box with pack of ice/ ice gels is recommended for carrying and storing the semen.
• Never place the semen in direct contact with ice. Always have a barrier between.
• Avoid jarring or dropping semen doses. Handle them careful to prevent damage to s***m cells.
• Store semen doses horizontally, not in an upright position. This ensures maximum contact between s***m and the diluent in which it is preserved, which maintains nutrient availability to the s***m, and is important to protect semen viability and maximise shelf life.

*Hygienic Practices during insemination*
• Insemination should be a clean procedure to minimize the risk of infection.
• Only remove doses as they are needed for insemination, not before the catheter has been introduced.
• To prevent virginal infection/metritis. wipe clean the v***a with a dry towel or napkins. Do not use water to clean the back during insemination.
• Use a clean and wrapped catheter in every insemination.
• Always keep your pens clean and dry.
