Elly Savatia, a Kenyan entrepreneur, has won the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2025 for his groundbreaking creation β Terp 360, an AI-powered app that translates speech and text into sign language using 3D avatars in real time.
Often described as the βGoogle Translate for Sign Language,β Terp 360 bridges communication between hearing and deaf communities without the need for human interpreters.
Developed in close collaboration with deaf and hard-of-hearing Kenyans, the platform already recognizes over 2,300 Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) signs and is set to expand to include Rwandan, Ugandan, South African, British, and American Sign Languages.
The innovation not only promotes inclusivity and accessibility but also positions Kenya as a leader in AI for social impact and digital inclusion in Africa.
