Choosing the wrong mentor can cost you years.

Not every person with influence is meant to have influence over your life. Before you ask who can mentor you, ask whether they're helping you become the person God is calling you to be.



Competence matters.

A mentor should already be living what you're hoping to learn. Their results won't guarantee your success, but they can save you from unnecessary mistakes.



Connection matters.

Mentorship is more than transferring knowledge. Trust, respect, and genuine relationship create the environment where real growth happens.



Character matters most.

Skills can open doors, but character determines where those doors lead. Choose mentors whose values are worth following, not just their achievements.



The greatest mentors don't simply change your skills. They change your perspective.

The right mentor helps you see what's possible before you can see it for yourself. That's why choosing wisely is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make.

One of the greatest gifts God gives us in life is the gift of mentorship.

None of us were created to figure life out alone. Throughout Scripture, we see God using relationships to shape leaders. Moses had Jethro. Joshua had Moses. Elisha had Elijah. Timothy had Paul. Growth has always happened through someone willing to pour into another.

But not every mentor is the right mentor.

As I reflect on my own journey, I've learned to look for three things: competence, character, and connection. Can they help me? Can I trust them? Do their values point me closer to the person God is calling me to become?

A mentor doesn't have to be perfect, but they should be faithful. Their life should reflect the wisdom they're teaching.

Whether you serve your way into a mentoring relationship or invest financially to learn from someone, approach it with humility and clarity. The right mentor won't simply give you information. They will help shape your thinking, strengthen your faith, and prepare you for the assignment God has placed on your life.

This weekend, I want to challenge something many of us have believed our entire lives.

"The early bird catches the worm."

I've repeated that proverb. You've probably heard it too.

But lately I've been asking myself a different question:

What happens to the person who did everything they were told to do... and still didn't get the worm?

Worked hard.
Showed up early.
Studied.
Built the business.
Made the sacrifices.

Yet life didn't follow the formula.

For a long time, we were taught that if we did the right things, the right rewards would automatically follow.

The problem is that when our identity becomes tied to our results, every delay starts to feel like failure.

I've come to believe something different.

Timing isn't "early."

Timing is when your assignment arrives.

Some people are called to start at 25.
Others at 45.
Others discover the work they were born to do at 60.

The dream isn't late.

It begins the moment you receive it.

So if you've been telling yourself, "I missed my chance,"maybe that's not the truth.

Maybe you've simply confused someone else's timeline with your own.

This weekend, don't bury your dream because of a proverb.

I used to think good advice was always worth following.

It took me years to realise that some of the biggest delays in my life came from people who genuinely wanted the best for me.

When I decided to leave employment in 2007 to build my own business, someone I respected sat me down over lunch and asked me one question:

“Why are you throwing your life away?"

He wasn't trying to discourage me.

He was trying to protect me.

A few months later, the post-election violence hit Kenya. Business became incredibly difficult. There were moments I questioned everything.

"Maybe they were right."

But looking back today, I realise something.

If I had built my future around other people's opinions, I would never have built my own life.

Well-meaning people can only advise from the level of awareness they have.

They don't see what you've wrestled with.

They don't feel the conviction you've been carrying.

They don't know the assignment God has placed in you.

There comes a point where you've gathered the facts, sought wise counsel, prayed, reflected... and then you must make the decision.

Not because everyone agrees.

But because you know it's yours to make.

The hardest part of leadership isn't making difficult decisions.

It's having the courage to keep moving after you've made them.

Have you ever delayed making a decision, even when deep down you already knew the answer?

Most people think indecisiveness is about not knowing what to do.

I don't think that's true.

More often than not, it's not that we can't. It's that we won't.

We're caught between competing priorities.
We're thinking about what could go wrong.
We're worried about disappointing people.
We're focused on what we don't want instead of getting clear on what we do want.

Here's a question that has changed the way I make decisions:

What do you want?

Not what everyone else expects from you.
Not what keeps everyone comfortable.
Not what helps you avoid criticism.

What do you want?

Because when you're clear on your purpose, decisions become easier. Purpose becomes the filter through which you make every choice.

Your future isn't built by wishing.
It's built one decision at a time.

So let me ask you:
