Semi–arid regions of Kenya—such as parts of Kitui, Baringo, Makueni, Kajiado, and West Pokot—have huge potential for beekeeping. With the right apiary management practices, farmers can achieve high honey yields, strong colonies, and healthier bees even in this harsh climates.
Below are proven steps to help you succeed:
🌼 1. Choose the Right Site
A good apiary site is the foundation of high production.
✔️ Place hives near natural forage (acacia, croton, aloe, sisal, sunflower, shrubs)
✔️ Ensure shade but good ventilation to prevent overheating
✔️ Keep away from noise, human activity & predators
✔️ Ensure clean water is within 300–500m
🪵 2. Select Appropriate Hives
For semi–arid areas:
Langstroth hives → high yield, easy management
Kenyan Top Bar Hives (KTBH) → affordable, ideal for beginners
Ensure beeswax starter strips for easy comb building.
Good hive construction = better colony strength.
🍯 3. Baiting & Attracting Colonies
To increase colonization rates:
✔️ Use natural beeswax, propolis, or lemongrass oil
✔️ Clean hives and seal gaps
✔️ Install hives just before flowering seasons
Colonization success = better yields later.
🌱 4. Plant & Protect Forage
Semi–arid areas experience forage shortages.
At Easybee Farms we recommend:
🌳 Acacia mellifera
🌳 Croton megalocarpus
🌺 Sunflower
🌿 Aloe vera
🌿 Basil, rosemary
These provide nectar even during dry months.
5. Provide Water & Shade.
Heat stress reduces honey yield. Provide:
✔️ A shaded apiary
✔️ Water in shallow containers with stones or sticks (to prevent drowning) but sticks will need to changed regularly.
