The VA Industry is Dead. Long Live the Strategic Business Partner.
Controversial? Maybe. True? Absolutely.
After 3 years in this space and working with many entrepreneurs, I've watched the industry transform before my eyes.
The old model is dying fast:
•"I need someone to answer my emails"
•"Can you schedule my social media posts?"
•"Help me organize my files"
The new reality entrepreneurs actually need:
•"I need someone who thinks like an owner"
•"Can you optimize my revenue streams?"
•"Help me scale without losing my mind"
Here's what's really happening:
1. The Commoditization Crisis Basic VA services are racing to the bottom. $5/hour overseas talent doing email and scheduling.
The opportunity? Premium strategic support is skyrocketing in demand and price.
2. AI is Eliminating Tasks, Not Jobs ChatGPT can write emails. Calendly handles scheduling. Canva creates graphics.
But AI can't:
• Read between the lines in client communications
• Make strategic decisions with incomplete information
• Build relationships that drive long-term value
• Spot revenue opportunities you're missing.
3. The Executive Partnership Evolution Smart entrepreneurs aren't hiring VAs anymore. They're hiring Strategic Operating Partners who can:
• Think strategically, not just execute tactically
• Identify blind spots and growth opportunities
• Optimize systems for scale, not just efficiency
• Represent their brand with the same care they would
What I'm seeing in my premium practice:
Traditional VAs: Completing tasks as assigned Strategic Partners: Proactively solving problems clients didn't even know they had
The psychology shift: Entrepreneurs used to think "I need help with tasks." Now they're thinking "I need someone who can run my business like I would."
Where this is all heading:
The winners will be those who position themselves as:
•Strategic Business Consultants
• Revenue Optimization Specialists
• Executive Decision Partners
• Scalability Architects
The losers will be competing on price for commoditized tasks.
My prediction: By 2027, the term "Virtual Assistant" will be as outdated as "Secretary."
We'll be called Strategic Business Partners, Remote COOs, or Executive Operations Specialists.
Because here's the truth:
Successful entrepreneurs don't need assistants.
They need partners who can think, strategize, and execute at their level.
The future belongs to those who stop asking "What do you need me to do?" and start asking "How can we grow this business together?"
