In October 4, 2014 Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) in partnership with Big Ship CBO and the Ganahola community planted 500 mangroves seedlings along the Tudor Creek – Mikindani. The planting exercise involved lining, digging holes, carrying seedlings and planting.

A member of the community who participated in the activity commented, “KeMU is the first University to plant mangroves here. It is a good thing because when others see that the most educated are in the forefront to save mangroves, then they will see the seriousness of the matter and join. I hope the trees we have planted today survive so that next time we plant in the other patches and eventually fill this area with mangroves!...... Am glad I participated because I got myself a t-shirt.

An evaluation done today the October 29, 2014 by Big Ship CBO members shows about 98% success rate of the seedlings planted in partnership with KeMU on October 4, 2014.

These three are part of Mkunguni beach management unit - in Msambweni, Kwale County. Beach Management Units (BMUs) are community-based organizations that bring together everyone involved in fisheries at a beach – boat owners, boat crew, traders, processors, boat builders and repairers, net repairers and others – to manage fisheries resources and improving the livelihoods of the community members.
What amazed me on this day was how the lady in the photo could tell weight of the fish by just looking at it!! She told me the bunch of fish (not sure this is good english) was 15 Kgs. We confirmed with the weighing scale!
Psconsult has been sub-contracted by CORDIO EA to undertake monitoring and evaluation of the UNDP-SGP project.

In the month of June 2014, Big Ship CBO and Citi Bank launched rehabilitation of the Tudor Creek ecosystem by planting of the mangrove at the gaps that have mostly been caused by human activity.
The initiative involved planting of 6,500 mangrove seedlings by the Mikindani community in a period of 6 days. This initiative is part of "Tunza Miti, Linda Maisha Campaign" and complements the Government of Kenya efforts in the vision 2030,

We led the team that designed the Tunza miti, Linda maisha project, and are now monitoring its implementation.

The Problem Statement:

Statistics show that Kenya has lost about 20% of the mangrove cover which indicate the highest loss rate globally. According to report by KEMFRI the loss of the mangrove is as a result of over-harvesting, land use (Conversations) and the recent climate change through flooding and massive sedimentation.

Areas that have mostly been affected are Portreiz and Tudor Creek in Mombasa which have lost almost 46% and 86% of the vegetation respectively.(KEMFRI).

Student leadership and motivation programme:

In partnership with Compassion International-Gede (Malindi) and the ACK church we participated in drawing and implementing this wonderful programme!

Beneficiaries visited different companies and had a great opportunity to interact with employees and different levels. It was interesting to notice after the field trip, majority of the students seemed to know which career path to follow.

The field trip experience and the student leadership workshop facilitated by our trainers left the students with clear goals – personal, social, academic and professional goals!
